Doug Jones Talks About Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein

From Abe Sapien to El Fauno to Silver Surfer to Frankenstein? We all know that Doug Jones is Guillermo del Toro's go-to guy for creature work and he is currently working on a new Frankenstein movie for Universal. So put two and two together and there you go. SciFi Wire caught up with Jones recently and asked him about the talk that Guillermo is gearing up for a Frankenstein costume fitting right before he's about to spend three years working on The Hobbit. "Guillermo did say to the press that he's already cast me as his monster, but we've yet to talk about it. But in his mind, if that's what he's decided, then it's done."

For those who need a crash course on this Frankenstein, Jones explains: "[Guillermo's] got a four-picture deal with Universal, so once he's done with The Hobbit, I think the first thing that's up on the docket will be Frankenstein. And reinvention is going to be the name of it, because he's going back to the Mary Shelley book and starting fresh with it." So this new Frankenstein isn't something we'll see until at least 2012 once the second Hobbit movie hits? Then why start work so early? "We are going to do some tests just to see, because he has five years to play with this. He's taking that luxury of time to make this absolutely perfect."

"This is his dream. [Del Toro] was inspired by Frankenstein when he was a kid. It was the monster that made him want to make monsters. So because of that it's been [a] lifelong [dream], and he wants to be perfect with him."

Jones does confirm that they're starting makeup tests in a couple of weeks. And as for what del Toro's new Frankenstein monster might look like, well, here's the only hint that Jones gives. "It will not be a big, lumbering Boris Karloff type, but more of a skinny, skeletal, stringy muscled version made from spare parts of some other guy," he says. "The designs I have seen so far of the makeup test we are going to try brought tears to my eyes. I can't tell you what I saw but just know it brought tears to my eyes. I was emotionally touched that I may get to play this character." I can't wait to see what GdT has come up with!

For now, we'll just have to wait patiently for more on Gullermo del Toro's Frankenstein, and it may be a long wait. I hope that del Toro decides to release some of these makeup test shots early - because with all this buzz, I don't want to have to wait until 2012 to see what Doug Jones will look like as Frankenstein.
