IFC Showing Lars von Trier's Antichrist in Theaters in October
June 25, 2009
by Alex Billington
One of the most controversial films of the year is officially getting a pre-Halloween limited release in Los Angeles and New York. IFC has set Lars von Trier's Antichrist for release on October 23rd. IFC will widen the theatrical release after its initial opening. It's also slated to show via their Video On-Demand service starting on October 21st as well, if you prefer to watch this in the comfort of your own home. No confirmation on whether the theatrical version will be NC-17 or not, though from the sounds of it, that's how it'll be shown in theaters. It was confirmed a few weeks ago that the NC-17 cut would show in the UK.
Antichrist, which premiered at Cannes in May, is controversial not only because of its content, but the polarizing reactions from the fest. Anne Thompson on Variety said in May after it was picked up by IFC that they would "show the movie uncut in a few U.S. cinemas and then trim it—working with the director—to show it on VOD." I will say that if you have any interest in seeing this, then you better see it in theaters, because as insane as the NC-17 unedited version is, you will appreciate it all the more. Co-star Charlotte Gainsbourg won the acting award in Cannes from the fest. We'll keep you in the loop on this release!

I would love to see it.
All I keep hearing is good things about it.
Only problem is that when they do special theatrical showings in certain cities they never show them in CHICAGO!
And I don't know why. We have a few independant theaters here downtown alone.

#1…The Aristocrats?
So, does this movie actually have anything to do with the "antichrist" or did the director just want to give it a controversial name?
