It's Now or Never for Frank Darabont's Fahrenheit 451 Movie

Screenwriter Frank Darabont has been trying to get his Fahrenheit 451 movie made for years now. Its suffered numerous setbacks, including Tom Hanks dropping out last year, but he's determined to still get his vision of Ray Bradbury's novel to the big screen sooner than later. "I'm out to somebody at the moment, fingers crossed, because, boy, do I want to make that movie. I'm not giving up. I'll die in the traces before I don't make that movie," Darabont told SciFi Wire last night. While he wouldn't reveal the name of the actor he's pursuing to play Guy Montag, Darabont did say he's hoping it works out or all hope will be lost.
Darabont also added that the actor "is of a clout that could get a medium-budget sci-fi film made," but if he doesn't get him, it could be the end of this project. "It's not one of those movies that are vastly expensive by any contemporary standard, but money is still money, and it's of a price that requires somebody that will justify that investment," Darabont said, adding that this will most likely have a bigger budget than The Mist (which cost roughly $18 million to make). As a reminder again, Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 follows a fireman in the future who's job it is to burn books, but he begins to question his duties after meeting a young girl.
"I promised myself that it would at least go into production while Ray Bradbury were still with us," he says. "It's not like I think he's going to leave tomorrow, but he's not getting any younger. So I have an emotional commitment to wanting to get the wheels well and truly in motion while he's still here to enjoy that." In the 1966 version of Fahrenheit 451 directed by François Truffaut, Guy Montag was played by Austrian actor Oskar Werner. Whichever actor Darabont is after better not pass this up - it would be a huge role for them, even if it doesn't have a huge budget or studio behind it. Here's to hoping Darabont gets this made soon!

They had made a film version of the book in 1966 that hardly followed the actual plot of the book so hopefully this will give us a better look of whatthe book was actually about on the screen.

Let's see… he said the actor he is pursuing would get a medium sized sci-fi budget; so it's probably not Tom Hanks bouncing back to the project (he'd bring a huge budget). Maybe someone along the lines of a Viggo Mortensen. He has the marquee of the Lord of the Rings films and the weight of his performances, in films like Eastern Promises and A History of Violence.

It's a frigging travesty that a filmmaker of Darabont's stature has to pin his hopes on some actor's involvement, or no green light. Ridiculous.
This is one of the better unproduced scripts out there.

If he wants to play true to the casting in Truffault's (the man is a genius) f-up with the first Fahrenheit (not his fault completely, it was his first U.$. film), then Daniel Craig would fit Oskar Werner's shoes quite well (he was in Renaissance).
As for the female lead, Megan Fox, now that would be a travesty, I guess our buddy Zach is a casualty of the Fahrenheit 451-esque pop media blitz world we live in…I'd go with Sarah Polley in that role…
