Confirmed: An American Werewolf In London Being Remade!
June 28, 2009
by Alex Billington
Another day, another remake. Here we go again. Bloody Disgusting is reporting that Dimension Films has picked up the remake rights to An American Werewolf in London from writer/director John Landis himself. Even if you haven't seen An American Werewolf in London, you probably already know that it is a classic monster movie that not many other werewolf movies have ever come close to living up to. But with the success of Twilight (which will have werewolves starting with New Moon) and Sony's Underworld franchise, it looks like The Weinstein Company might want their own big, bad, scary werewolf movie, too.
This news isn't official, as Bloody Disgusting is only saying that one of their "regular tipsters" informed them that the rights had ended up at Dimension Films, so take this as a rumor for now. We know that The Weinstein Company is hurting, but are they really so desperate that they need to remake a classic like this? As stated by a commenter on BD: "Why remake a film like that. Do something like The Howling, where it can actually be improved upon. Werewolf in London is damn near perfect." I couldn't agree more. But let's not focus on the bad, let's focus on the good - An American Werewolf in London was a fantastic movie.
Update: Following their original scoop on Sunday, Bloody Disgusting contacted John Landis to try and get confirmation. "Brad - Yes, Dimension is now in negotiation for the An American Werewolf in London remake rights. Perhaps someone will make a brilliant movie out of it," Landis told them. So there you have it, it's confirmed and is definitely happening. Additionally, both Variety and THR reported the news on Monday afternoon, making it all the more official. Producers Sean and Bryan Furst, who most recently made the vampire movie Daybreakers for Lionsgate, are developing this project for The Weinstein Company.

Only if Rick Baker is involved! But they'll probably just use a bunch of CGI and it will look awful. I mean how bad was "American Werewolve in Paris". Hope not though.

this movie scared the crap out of me when i was a child, i haven't seen it since but now this makes me want to go out and pick it up. I really dont see the point in these kind of remakes get the right to a movie where you can make better than the original. I cannot see this being better than the original at all.

Why? Paris sucked and that was a…reboot/make/whatever. They have the wolf man. What is this? 1998? Do we need two of the same plot movies coming out now?

> with the success of Twilight
and with the death of Michael Jackson? Some people from Werewolf worked with Jackson on his Thriller, including the chief mask master, if I am not mistaken.

This movie scared the shit out of me as a kid as well. I was haunted for weeks, seriously. That scene in the subway, still is so wicked. Back then i just didn't get why it was supposed to be FUNNY. Like how???? lol
The movie industry is starting to hit rock bottom. So much crap. So much other crap that makes 200 mill in 5 days…and these POINTLESS so called re-fuckin-boots. OMG.
It must stop. Please.
No matter what, the original will always be better. I mean look at Halloween? WHat was the point of it?
Its like thinking doing a remake of some like it hot is a good idea. Or doing the pink panther with steve martin…oh wait….
it needs to end…

My friends dad played the guy who gets eaten on the stairs in the subway in that, he also played Jabba the Hutt's right hand man Bib Fortuna.
Not that that means anything, but seriously, no! Why don't they do it in another city like the Paris one?
I liked American Werewolf because of it's humour, but these remakes aren't funny at all.

an american werewolf in london what a fucking classic the dream within a dream scene, the transformation scene (best ever)the sub way scene(fuck me scary) & the carnage in picadilly circus(that may be spelt wrong).i remember my mum renting this on video 1st(with enter the dragon & michael jacksons thriller .)in the 80s.they would probably fuck up the remake by doing a cgi transformation.

This was a great scarmedy…ah…comescare? Ack…comedy and scary. You know what I mean. It was a classic. Scared the jujubees out of me but made me laugh at the same time. Please don't touch this classic…unless you have the capabilities to turn it into a "Dark Knight" level of remix. (not drama wise, I mean as they eleveated that show).
Oey…I just can't express myself today.
In otherwords…leave it alone if you cannot improve on it. And is there anything really to improve on? I think not.

Okay, just as a public service I'd like to pass along a little nugget o' information that should help people everywhere cope with any upcoming remake, reboot, or reimagining.
Q: Why are they remaking [insert name of film]?
A: To make money. That is, after all, why they got into the movie business - money, fame, notoriety. If you want to see movies made out of the love of film, go to a festival. It's called "the movie industry" for a reason - it's an industry like anything else. A film company without money doesn't make any more films. Why risk millions of dollars on some unknown movie or idea, when you can usually double, triple, or quadruple your investment by remaking an older film that already has a fan-base built in? That's already part of our cultural zeitgeist?
So stop complaining about all the remakes being made and just accept that as long as audiences (including you there, doing all the complaining) keep spending their money to watch studios remake old movies, studios will keep remaking old movies.
Example: Planet of the Apes. By no means a "good" remake - panned by critics, generally disliked by the movie-going public. Cost to make? 100 million. Total worldwide box office? 362 million. Yup, even a sucktastic movie like Planet of the Apes can triple it's investment.
Hope this helps give you some insight into the economics of the current film industry.

Yes, #16…that is correctomundo.
I totally get the economics of it. But it's no fun when we can't complain about it.
I just hope they do it justice. I'm keeping my fingers and pic-axe crossed.

#16 / Pete the Greek - yes, you are entirely right, of course. doesn't matter how badly we as individual readers might view a Halloween remake, a RoboCop reboot, a Hellraiser retread, a Day The Earth Stood Still copy, they still make enough money, and so will still get made. and this is because we, as the ticket buying public, still go and see them, regardless.
perhaps I'm entering my grumbling old coger stage early. I generally dislike remakes. opinions usually change after seeing a good one, then get re-confirmed after seeing a bad one. Thomas Crown Affair remake? better, fabulous chemistry, a more entertaining story. The Omen remake? utterly atrocious filmmaking from someone with no concept of suspense, tension or flair. what do I think of remakes? depends - what was the last one I saw?!
but… it's the sheer VOLUME or remakes (please - it's a 'remake') coming so close together that has those older than 15 staring at our screens open-mouthed. I get Fame being remade - it works well with today's glut of dance films and will appeal to the target audience. but seriously - Teen Wolf? Conan? Red Sonja? The Stepfather? Elm Street? Karate Kid? Pelham 123? Total Recall? The Warriors? and even great modern films - Let The Right One In? Das Experiment? Oldboy? [Rec]?
back on topic.. as for An American Werewolf In London being remade - it's in my personal Leave Well Alone, Bitches! folder. will I see the remake? nope. but millions probably will. hence - it will get made.
sucks, eh?
