Second Alternate Trailer for Hayao Miyazaki's Ponyo

Ponyo Trailer

Just last week, Disney debuted the official US trailer for Ponyo, the newest Hayao Miyazaki film hitting theaters here fairly soon. However, I feel like the trailer got lost in the mix last week, with the debut of Transformers 2 and everything. Additionally, Disney has released a slightly different version of that same trailer that includes an extended segment in the middle highlighting the actors they hired to voice this US release of the film. Drew McWeeny at HitFix just reviewed it: "Ponyo is a singular experience, animation as pure emotion, a love story and an adventure and one of the real treats for 2009 so far." I hope you enjoy!

Watch the alternate trailer for Hayao Miyazaki's Ponyo:

An animated adventure centered on a 5-year-old boy and his relationship with a goldfish princess who longs to become human. You can also check out an old Japanese teaser trailer right here if interested.

Ponyo on the Cliff is both written and directed by master animator Hayao Miyazaki, of Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and Howl's Moving Castle previously. The film was animated at the legendary Studio Ghibli. This was released in Japan last summer and was a huge hit at the box office. Disney is bringing Ponyo on the Cliff, now known as just Ponyo, to theaters on August 14th.

I'm not saying FIRST… and that looks like a great movie!

A filmaker that in my eyes can do no wrong. I'm looking forward to this. Have to admit when the narrator said 'and Matt Damon' for some reason I really wanted to hear the 'Maaatt Daamon' from Team America'.

miyazaki's love for the environment and natural world is what i fully appreciate in his films. as much as i loathe anime, his work is always something to look forward to.

Ponyo movie anyone? Follow the link and enjoy! http://www.animecrazy.net/ponyo-on-the-cliff-by-the-sea-miyazaki-hayao/#more-15897

This movie has been available for free viewing like months ago… so why didn't Disney tried to google this one and at least block off any release over the internet? Unless, that Ponyo movie in the above link is different from what Disney is trying to sell…

I know Anime is a huge fad right now, but hopefully someday soon you all will realize that it's second rate animation

Chasper on Jun 29, 2009

@chasper i don't know in what terms you rate animation but animation is animation no matter what terms you use or in what forms it may appear… 2D or 3D… motion-captured or hand-drawn… everything is just a matter of preference… hence, sooner or later, any animation will rise and fall basically due to its fans…

and from what i see, "Anime" (an abbreviated pronunciation in Japanese of "animation") is quite popular because of the "difference or uniqueness or even the weirdness" that it offers compared to what the usual hollywood-animation offers… hence, it stands out…

those being said, there's no such thing, if we look at how the animation is created and presented, as second rate animation - there's only the difference that separates all animation from each other…

the only second rate i consider are those who tried to criticize an art without understanding the culture behind it or at least the reason why it was animated that way… guess you don't like the clay thing too… :P

#5, you need a reality check. Anime is anything BUT second-rate animation. You may get the impression from various animes that have received bastardized North American translations, but there is plenty of first-rate Japanese animation out there. Miyazaki is the master, go see anything he's done. Akira is also a great example.

Can't wait for this! Even with Noah Cyrus an Frankie Jonas in there, the rest of the voice cast makes up for it. Especially Tina Fey (will see ANYTHING she stars in).

I respect your opinions, but we'll all talk when they stop slapping 80's hand-drawns on epic moving backgrounds using tired swivel camera's to show character emotion…

@Chasper
Have you seen any of the Miyazaki movies? Anime is much better quality than some of the shitty cartoons Nickelodeon or Cartoon Network is putting out. Especially in the Miyazaki movies. Hence why it was described as legendary animation. The movies are beautifully written and animated and take you to places that I have never seen any other animation take me. You have absolutley no idea what you are talking about and you should watch these movies before you say anything else.

Love his films……………….

@Chasper

Hayao Miyazaki movies are not about CG there about AMAZING Characters and many different worlds to explore. I think his movies are then only movies that I don't want done in CG

@ 14

i like all genres except most dramas and musicals (shudder)

this just looks like 3 years olds should see it and just them

and by the way telling me to expand my mind then winking at me doesnt make me think your straight at all!

so… GAYYYYYYYY!

zach on Jun 29, 2009

Zach, listen Fla was just trying to have you be more open to things. And yes while I agree most "popular musicals" are not good(i.e High School Musical, the reimagining of Fame) others like Repo!, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, and the Producers are amazing. And drama films are by far one of the better genres. What genres you left to appreciate are Horror, Thriller, Comedy, Romance, Sci-Fi, Action. So yes you need to be more open to new films, and let's not forget a wink is only how one interprets it. Perhaps if you interpreted that wink as gay, then you may be gay yourself.

Hey, Zach, you hate dramas and Miyazaki? You might hate plot, too. Go, pick up Ballistics: Ecks vs. Sever.

just watched it 2 days ago. not as good as his other work but still amazing
eye candy the whole way through. but a very very kiddie story.

I'm a huge anime and Miyazaki fan, but i actually dont think this looks all that good. And im not really all that impressed by Disneys choice of actors either. But i will still watch it and hopefully i turn out to be wrong.

Also, at #5 or whoever reckons anime is 2nd rate, if anything anime sets the standards for animation! American cartoons are nothing compared to anime, not only with the animation itself but also with the story lines. You are either dumb or lack imagination.

So…. what the hell is this? He's/She's a shrimp that turns into a person that some Jedi wants to save the world by jumping on giant fish in the rain and making cars crash and Matt Damon drown???? Ya, ur right, its amazing!! (the last bit was sarcasm)

tinman on Jul 9, 2009

Apparently, Miyazaki did create this movie for children and it is a fantasy, just like Totoro. Therefore, yes, it's true that this movie seems a bit childish and shallow, an impression that is not helped by the fact that Disney just had to do some more underhanded advertisement (Looky here, Miley Cyrus' little sister and the Jonas Bros.' little brother! Come you masses of brainwashed children!). But I think many of the commenters are mistakenly judging the entirety of Miyazaki's work based on these trailers.

Please, if you're going to jump to monumental conclusions such as "all anime suck" or "Miyazaki is gay" or whatever else, give us your credentials first. Have a degree in filmmaking/animation or art history? Fine. But don't judge based on ignorance. At least watch Miyazaki's other movies too.

ok just because its anime you dont need to make fun of it…. besides EVERYONE has oppinions…. and making fun of a movie before you see it makes you seem dumb especialy if its acually really good and gets an oscar or something……… anyways the director is good so the movie is probly be really good too….
