Sound Off: Judd Apatow's Funny People - What Did You Think?

Funny People

Now that you've seen it, what did you think? Adam Sandler's former roommate and now famous producer and director Judd Apatow returns this summer with his third feature film - Funny People. Following both 40 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up, Apatow has undoubtedly made his most personal film to date, and yet potentially the funniest one. But at 146 minutes long, is it actually any good? Is there too much drama and not enough comedy? Or does it have just the right balance between humor and emotion? Sound off below, leave your thoughts, and let us know what you thought of Judd Apatow's Funny People!

Creepy New Posters for Bruce Willis' Sci-Fi Movie Surrogates

Surrogates

Human Perfection. What Could Go Wrong? I really don't like this marketing campaign Disney is running for their upcoming sci-fi movie Surrogates. Their campaign seems to involve hiring as many attractive models as they can to represent the "perfect" human and, through jealousy I guess, make audiences interested in the movie. And now with these new banners, it's just getting worse, in a very eerie way. IGN has debuted a new series of posters for Surrogates that are just plain creepy. I saw one of these things on a billboard last night and nearly crashed trying to look at it. Is that a good thing? I don't know, you tell me!

Uh Oh, Saw VII to Be in 3D - Have They Jumped the Shark?

David Hackl - Saw

I think they've finally jumped the shark this time. I was okay with Lionsgate continuing the Saw franchise for upwards of 10 movies. I was okay with them constantly bringing back Jigsaw from the dead and/or rehashing him with flashbacks. But now they're going 3D? That's not okay! ShockTillYouDrop reports from the premiere of The Collector last night that Saw VII (the next sequel due out in 2010) will be in 3D. Apparently co-writer Marcus Dunstan (who directed The Collector) told them that they've decided to go 3D starting with the seventh Saw movie and have been working in advance to prepare the technical side of it.

Must Watch: Second Full Trailer for Hayao Miyazaki's Ponyo

Ponyo

Yet another full-length trailer for Hayao Miyazaki's Ponyo has debuted today just two weeks before it finally hits US theaters. I had the chance to see Ponyo recently and it is a truly wonderful film. It harkens back to Miyazaki's older, more kid-focused work, like My Neighbor Totoro and Kiki's Delivery Service. I also had the chance to meet and interview Miyazaki, so stay tuned for that. Even though this is a very much a kids movie, adults can still enjoy it, especially if you're looking for something just to sit back and escape from reality with for a few hours. Anyway, check out this trailer and catch Ponyo in theaters soon. Enjoy!

Universal Wants Marc Webb for Another Jesus Christ Superstar?

Jesus Christ Superstar

Even more musicals from Universal? The Risky Biz Blog is reporting that Universal is looking to develop a remake of Jesus Christ Superstar, the Broadway musical turned movie from the 70's. The studio has been talking with 500 Days of Summer director Marc Webb (who blogged for us recently) because of his success with that movie and his music video background. Although they're also saying that "the studio and Webb are not in active negotiations at the moment." The good news is that Universal is looking at other directors as well - because the truth is that I really don't want Webb to follow-up 500 Days with a musical.

Rob Marshall the Frontrunner for Pirates of the Caribbean 4?

Rob Marshall

Apparently Gore Verbinski won't be returning. Variety reports today that since Disney is pushing forward with a fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie for 2011, they need to find a new director, and apparently their top choice is Rob Marshall. Marshall is an Oscar nominated director with three big films under his belt: Chicago, Memoirs of a Geisha, and the upcoming musical Nine. They report that: "While Marshall's involvement wasn't immediately confirmed, sources said things look good enough that the studio has begun casting new characters that will appear in the picture." Really? This is the best director they could find?

Is Monsters Inc 2 Inching Along One Website at a Time?

Monsters Inc

Disney and Pixar keep denying it, but we keep discovering things that seem to say it's true. Jim Hill Media published an interesting article looking at a batch of new domain names that Disney recently registered. I know that this is kind of bottom-of-the-barrel snooping, but it's one of the only ways to get unofficial early confirmation. One group of new domain names registered were for World War Robot, the brand new Jerry Bruckheimer project that was just announced tonight (read all about that here). The other new domain name registered - Monsters2.com. So does this mean that Monsters Inc 2 is officially coming soon?

It's Official - Ridley Scott is Directing the Alien Prequel!

Alien

Can you believe it? I'm not sure if I still do! Variety is reporting that Ridley Scott is officially attached to return as the director of an Alien prequel being written by newcomer Jon Spaihts. Spaihts got the job after pitching the studio and Scott Free Production, who will also produce the film. The story is being setup to precede Ridley's 1979 film, but as for what exactly will take place, those details are being kept under wraps at the moment. Spaihts has been the "go-to-guy" in Hollywood for space thrillers, but his work hasn't hit the big screen yet. Let's hope it's good, because no one wants a repeat of Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull.

Worth Watching - July 31: Richard Eyre's The Other Man Trailer

The Other Man Trailer

Now this is a very odd trailer. I'm not sure if they just didn't have the budget to mix the audio correctly of it's just supposed to be that way. I mean, it looks good visually, the editing is spot-on, but the audio is just weird. The Other Man stars Liam Neeson, Antonio Banderas, and Laura Linney, and is a "taut thriller" about adultery. I'm not sure if it's really that great of a film, but coming from Richard Eyre, who previously directed Notes on a Scandal, I expect it to at least be fairly enticing (I liked Scandal). That said, I'll let you experience this trailer for yourself, because there's not much more I can say to prepare you. Watch it below!

Nacho Vigalondo is Taking Us to Gangland in a Video Game

Nacho Vigalondo

If you don't know who Nacho Vigalondo is, I'll happily wait until you're acquainted with him. Nacho is a crazy up-and-coming filmmaker from Spain who treated us to the time travel film Timecrimes last year and was nominated for an Oscar for his short 7:35 in the Morning. He's now set to direct Gangland, an action comedy based on his own original idea that's being written by Pat Healy. The story revolves around a team of video game developers who get in over their heads after they promise to deliver the most realistic game of all time, titled “Gangland,” and soon find themselves having to survive in a real-life criminal underworld.

Spierig Brothers Set to Bring Us 'Captain Blood' in Space?

Spierig Brothers - Captain Blood

Last December it was announced that Phillip Noyce would be directing a remake of the 1935 swashbuckler pirate classic Captain Blood. Variety announces that Noyce is off the project and has been replaced by Michael and Peter Spierig, the two Australian brothers behind the upcoming Daybreakers movie. But there's a twist - the Spierig's Captain Blood will be set in space. Warner Brothers heard numerous tired pitches off and on, but "when I took a look at [the Spierig's] animatic depiction of a pirate battle in space, it had such a distinctive visual look to it that I said, 'Great, I get it'," producer Bill Gerber explained. Read on!

Kooky New Poster for Steven Soderbergh's The Informant!

Steven Soderbergh's The Informant!

No, that image above is not a part of the new poster (you have to read on to see what it looks like)! I just love the marketing for this movie. Whoever has been designing the posters for Steven Soderbergh's The Informant! deserves some kind of award for the craziest, kookiest, most amusing posters of the year. The first one that debuted with the trailer featured a goofy looking Matt Damon and the word "Unbelievable!" across the entire thing. This one is even crazier than previous but I still just love it! As for whether or not it'll actually help sell the movie to audiences, well, that is yet to be seen. Anyway, check out the poster!
