Alex Winter's The Gate Remake Secures German Funding

Another day, another remake. But this is one I'm actually looking forward to seeing. Way back in February we wrote about a remake of Stephen Dorff's 1987 creature feature The Gate that was going to be directed by one Bill S. Preston, Esquire, aka Alex Winter. At the time this was only in the early development stages, however, Bloody Disgusting has confirmed that H20 Motion Pictures, the production company behind this remake, has received the funding it needs to get this into production this year. Multiple German investors have given them roughly $3.1 million to make this Germany's first 3D live action film. Anyone excited?
The Gate, directed by Hungarian filmmaker Tibor Takács and starring Stephen Dorff, was about three kids who accidentally release a horde of nasty, pint-sized demons from a hole in their backyard. I guess you could say it's kind of a cult classic now, but apparently it was pretty scary when it came out in 1987. After starring in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, Winter directed Freaked and the indie thriller Fever. Shooting on this remake will start this summer at a studio in Cologne, Germany. The visual effects will be handled by Pixomondo, whose recent work includes Roland Emmerich's 2012 and James McTeigue’s Ninja Assassin.
As I said at the start, I'm actually looking forward to this, beyond the fact that it's being directed by Bill from Bill & Ted. It's got a modestly small budget and a great little concept, which is just about everything it needs to become a badass remake. Although as always I'm worried about the 3D. We'll be following this closely!

Dude! I was just talking to one of my buddies @ work about this remake. He didnt believe me. Just because of the whole bill thing. My kids are gonna flip when i tell them about this. Can u imagine a six year old that knows alex winters movies. thats my son. he calls keanu the other guy! isnt that hilarious?

I loved this movie and it's one of those horror movies that has a cool 80's feel. Considering the fact of how they often destroy horror movies now I'm not quite excited to see this one being remade.

You can make a 3D film for $3.1 million?? I thought the "3D" part of it made it alot more expensive.
"Multiple German investors" = doctors, lawyers, dentists who get a taxbreak by investing in movies.
Similar "multiple german investors" are the reason Uwe Boll has made so many, great, fantastic movies…
Anyhow, 'The Gate' was a favorite movie of mine and my mates when we were kids, could be fun with this 3D version. Don't really feel any aversion to it being remade…hmmm. That was odd…

This was a fun movie that revelled in its cheapnis and never took itself too seriously or let its humor be self-referential. The humor was in the interaction and not setup-and-punchline jokes. I hope they stay with that winning combination wherever they take this.
