First Trailer for Patton Oswalt's 'Big Fan' Football Indie
July 6, 2009
Source: Yahoo
by Alex Billington
The first trailer for the Sundance film Big Fan starring Patton Oswalt and both written and directed by Robert D. Siegel has debuted on Yahoo today. The story follows a hardcore football fan who gets beat up by his favorite player and must deal with the consequences. This actually looks a lot better as a trailer than I remember it being. Siegel's writing may have been fine, but his directing was completely amateur (read my review). I may still give this another shot when it hits theaters to see if Siegel has tweaked it at all since Sundance. Anyway, give it a shot, I expect a few of you may end up liking this indie a lot. Check this out!

Paul Aufiero, a 35-year-old parking garage attendant from Staten Island and hardcore New York Giants football fan, struggles to deal with the consequences when he is beaten up by his favorite player.
Big Fan is both written and directed by first-time filmmaker Robert D. Siegel, who's only previously credits are as screenwriter of The Onion Movie and Darren Aronofsky's The Wrestler. This film first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, but it didn't get picked up for distribution until April. First Independent Pictures will be bringing Big Fan to very limited theaters starting on August 28th this fall.

This movie would look a lot better if it was a comedy.

Yea I thought it was going to be more of a comedy. It doesn't seem like him getting beat up is warranted enough in this trailer, but maybe this wasn't the first time they've met. I'm a big Giants fan so I'll probably rent this.

I think Patton Oswalt can be a Robin Williams-type of actor, minus the over-the-top annoying mugging.
He looks OUTSTANDING in this.

I'm a New England Patriots fan so I can't think of anything better than watching a Giants fan get the piss knocked out of him!!! I'm watching this for sure!!

Man, this sounded really bad… but that trailer just sold me. I thought it was going to be an over the top comedy, but yeah… this looks really good.

This looks really good. I hope it's better now than what you saw at Sundance, Alex, because I'd hate to be disappointed by this. Patton Oswalt looks fantastic in this trailer.
And seriously who's boobs were those? Anybody know?

Because I'm from the u.k. American Football makes no sense to me what-so-ever. For that matter nor does football here. I digress. This looks amazing and could fill the gap that 'The Wrestler'(Best movie I have seen this year) has created. I'm not too sure if this will get a release in the uk as the NFL isn't that big here. However we will get it on DVD/BLU RAY

Well, about acknowledging the screenplay of The Wrestler … I think it was the weakest part of the film.

The player said - "What are you, a stalker???" before he beat him up.
I know it's a drama and it looks very awesome … but there's an equal part of me admiring this as there is simply laughing that the world's biggest comic geek is portraying the tragedy of a sports fan.
There's alot to relate to in here - and yet, there's not a lot to relate to, since Sports fans pretty much define themselves by their lack of introspection.
"Don't overthink it. Just Do It."
Is that, in the end, what Oswalt's character's going to do?
Because I would find that hilarious, and to me that would make this a very, very dark comedy. Ha!

I'm on the fence about this one. Doesn't look bad though.

Initially I thought it looked like a funny satire towards football fans, but it really looks like a deep drama.
Go Patton!

Quit saying the movie is ruined
People keep saying the movie is spoiled, but it could just as easily be the beginning of the movie where he loses a bet or something, he does call into a sports talk show and has a rival called philadelphia phil. You dont know what happened so stop guessing like you saw something in the trailer everyone else didnt see.
