Jin Roh: The Wolf Brigade Also to Become a Live-Action Movie

Nothing is sacred. The moment we heard that Akira was being adapted into a live-action movie, that meant that nearly every other last anime would eventually follow suit. Next up is Jin Roh: The Wolf Brigade, the 1998 anime from director Hiroyuki Okiura. This news comes from the Anime News Network (via AICN) where they report that Production I.G Vice President Maki Terashima-Furuta said that "somebody has the live-action rights, and somebody was planning to make a live-action Jin Roh, but at the moment, I have no comment." I think that means some big name is involved with this, but she isn't allowed to say who yet.
Jin Roh: The Wolf Brigade is an anime set within Mamoru Oshii's Kerberos saga, an alternate history of a totalitarian Japan about what would happen if Japan lost World War II to Japan's friends - the Germans. The fascinating story follows a member of the Jin-Roh Brigade, an elite secret para-military police force that's part of the Special Armed Garrison, who falls for the sister of a female terrorist who died in front of him on duty. There's obviously a lot more to it than that, but it's a very rich story that could make for great cinema if adapted well. Obviously it's all about who is hired to write the screenplay and direct the movie.
I have a personal connection with Jin Roh as it was one of the very first anime movies I ever saw when I was younger. I had seen some of the imagery of the armor they use in it (see the photo above) and asked a friend of mine who was an anime expert what it was from. He explained and subsequently let me borrow the DVD. I spent one afternoon watching it and then I was hooked - I watched Akira the next weekend, then Ghost in the Shell, and so on. I revisit Jin Roh every so often for that nostalgic factor and it's always just as great as I originally remember. Here's to hoping it becomes as iconic of a live-action movie as it was as an anime.

It seemed like every other soldier based / FPS game design had a similar looking armor (red glowing eyes with gas mask type helmet) after Jin-Roh came out. I always thought they were one of the first (if not first) to use that distinctive armor design.
I've only seen a part of Jin-Roh. I can't recall that much anymore though, so i might go watch it again.

wow Alex…that means you were exposed to anime at a pretty late age and time relative to the releases of Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Ninja Scroll, and television series such as Robotech and Gundam. when you were young, did you even realize that voltron, transformers, and thundercats (korean) were not american drawn?
have you ever seen Spriggan? i'd looooove to see that film or any of the manga's stories made into a live-action film.

not a bad movie - would be nice if: 'Spriggan' was made live action and also 'Naruto' - which would absolutely kick ass if it were live action, but would think would be too hard to make and keep true to the anime style and essence.

Jin Roh: The Wolf Brigade comes in atleast 2 versions, the one i saw at a filmfestival in '99 or so was longer/had more scenes then the 'common' DVD you can buy, so check out what version you want.
Jin Roh: The Wolf Brigade might be slow for some, but it's recomended

So, probably "american live action movie", because Mamoru Oshii has already done a number of live-action kerberos films. I didn't like Jin-Roh, so this doesn't make me quite as ill as these news usually does.

Akira and this need to be given to a proper director with a decent budget and not dumbed down, the stories are great enough to have the impact in live action films today that the anime's had back in the day. Well, i think so anyway.
