Rupert Sanders Making His Debut with DiCaprio's Low Dweller
July 7, 2009
by Alex Billington
You probably don't know who Rupert Sanders is yet, but you will very soon. The up-and-coming British director is in negotiations (via THR) to direct the dark ex-con drama The Low Dweller being produced by Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way and Ridley Scott's Scott Free Productions. The script, which was sold to Relativity and MGM for seven-figures last year, centers on a Midwestern man who gets out of prison only to be haunted and pursued by a figure from his past. In addition to Low Dweller, Sanders is also attached to an action epic from producer Gianni Nunnari called The Wild Geese, though I expect he'll direct Dweller first.
While Sanders hasn't directed any feature films just yet, he does have a few short films and an incredibly impressive selection of commercials to his name, including the point-of-view escape commercial (watch it here) for the Wolverine video game and the bullet-time football tackling commercial (watch it here) for Nike. I can't wait to see what he can do with a feature film - as all of his commercials are fantastic. A lot of other great directors like Zack Snyder and David Fincher got their start in commercials as well. I'm sure that DiCaprio and Scott were completely confident in choosing Sanders to direct this very high profile project.
The Low Dweller, written by fellow up-and-comer Brad Ingelsby, also ended up in the #5 spot on the 2008 Black List. For the longest time, it was thought that Ridley Scott himself would be directing, but obviously not anymore. We'll be keeping a close eye on Rupert Sanders and The Low Dweller as this project develops!

I read the script for this one. Really, really great. Read more like a piece of literature than a screenplay. Really looking forward to this one.
