Aaron Sorkin Goes to Bat for Sony, Takes the Moneyball Pitch

Apparently this game is going to last more than just 9 innings. THR says that Sony is bringing on Aaron Sorkin (Charlie Wilson's War, The Social Network) to write a new version of Moneyball for the studio after the Steven Soderbergh version of it fell apart in the last few weeks. The studio wants to move forward quickly with the new iteration of the baseball drama, with Sorkin set to turn in his draft as soon as August. Brad Pitt is still attached to star as Oakland A's general manager Billy Beane, but Soderbergh "is not involved in the film in any capacity," as we reported. So are they close to finding a new director, too?
Sorkin is pretty much in bed with Sony and Amy Pascal right now, so this actually makes sense. He has a sports background with the "Sports Night" TV show that he created in the '90s. He's also responsible for the script to that Facebook movie that is apparently pretty amazing. I'm a bit surprised that Sony is still very interested in pushing forward with this. I thought one of the reasons they were hesitant is that baseball movies weren't big moneymakers in the international market. Yet they still want to make this? At least they've brought on a talented writer. Now they just need to find a director who can live up to Soderbergh.

Wow I guess this version will just be a Rudy baseball movie…not bad, but Soderberger would have done it better.
