When I was in France for Cannes, this film was showing in theaters, and I really want to see it, but it wasn't subtitled in English. Sony Pictures Classics has debuted the official US trailer for Coco Before Chanel on Apple recently. Audrey Tautou stars as legendary fashion designer Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel. The film portrays the formative years of Chanel's life, the years she spent discovering and inventing herself. This looks quite exquisite and fascinating and although I wouldn't expect to normally be into this, I am looking forward to seeing it, if at the very least to appreciate yet another brilliant performance from Audrey Tautou.

Coco Before Chanel, aka Coco avant Chanel in French, is directed by prominent French filmmaker Anne Fontaine, of Augustin, Dry Cleaning, In His Hands, and The Girl from Monaco previously. The screenplay was co-written by Anne Fontaine and Camille Fontaine as well as script consultant Christopher Hampton. The film is based on Edmonde Charles-Roux's biography titled "Chanel and Her World". Sony Pictures Classics is bringing Coco Avant Chanel to limited theaters in the US starting on September 25th this fall.

Audrey looks really good as Coco and I'll definitely see it. The only downfall is that there was the TV movie last fall with Shirley Maclaine and so many of the sets and costumes look identical and of course it will be the same story. This one obviously was done better but it's unfortunate that there are two versions so close together.

I saw it in France, sans subtitles. My French is very poor, but I could understand most of it and the general gist of the movie.
Sure, it's good, and Audrey Tautou did well in portraying a real-life figure, but it's not a very showy performance… I doubt she'll be considered for Best Actress. To be honest I liked the movie more towards its end, and I wish it could have been Coco Apres Chanel…
