Get Ready for a Hong Kong Phooey Hybrid CGI Movie
July 12, 2009
by Alex Billington
Even more classic cartoons are headed to the big screen. Alcon Entertainment is developing a live-action / CGI hybrid version of the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon Hong Kong Phooey and has hired David Goodman to write the screenplay. Goodman was an executive producer on "Family Guy" and "Futurama" and has also written scripts for a Who Is Killing the Great Chefs? remake and Last Blood webcomic adaptation. Hong Kong Phooey is a cartoon series that first aired on ABC Saturday morning in 1974 and features a kung-fu fighting dog and his sidekick cat who fight crime. Not much else is known about this.
The trend of adapting classic cartoon into hybrid CGI movies seems to be slowly becoming more popular in Hollywood - to the point where I think CGI hybrids might be the future of children's movies. Most recently, we heard about a Smurfs movie, but in addition to that, we've heard of other hybrid projects including (but not limited to): Tom and Jerry, Yogi Bear, Roger Rabbit, and The Incredible Mr. Limpet. The thing that disappoints me the most is that, despite watching Hong Kong Phooey when I was a little kid, I don't really care about this at all nor will I probably even see it. I guess that's what happens when you grow up, right?

come on…who can really pull of the voice of Scatman Crothers? Unless they decide to piece together his dialogue from old HKP episodes…either way sacrilege.

Wow, so last night there was an episode of this on Boomerang so I watched it. Not only is it shit but I said to myself "how weird would it be if Hollywood decided to adapt this?"
I shouldve kept my mouth shut.

They have to change the cultural contexts in the movie. The movie was made by Americans about asian/hong kong culture back in the 70's. There's a lot of stereotypes. If they do that again, it's not so PC I guess…or it will become like shit movies like Kung Pow or Balls of Fury. Btw, yeah I'm Chinese and lives in Hong Kong.
