Hugh Jackman Interested in a Quirky Comedy - Avon Man?
July 15, 2009
by Alex Billington
So where do go next with your career when coming off of hosting the Oscars and playing a jacked superhero for the fourth time? Well, first to Broadway, for a short time on stage alongside of Daniel Craig. Then how about to a high concept comedy from the same guy who wrote Hitch? Variety reports that 20th Century Fox has acquired Avon Man, a comedy pitch from writer Kevin Bisch, who's only credit is Hitch, besides being first assistant director on some short called White Light. Hugh Jackman might star as the main character - a car salesman who loses his job and turns reluctantly to the sales of Avon cosmetics to make ends meet.
This recession comedy apparently has a Full Monty vibe to it because Jackman's character sets out to save his financially strapped family and town by enlisting his buddies into the makeup business to win a regional contest. I'm sorry but, I don't want to see Hugh Jackman starring in Full Monty or a Full Monty-like movie, at all. He should be back butting heads with the execs at Fox trying to convince them to reboot the next Wolverine sequel with a better screenwriter, not taking on comedies like this. Besides animated movies, he hasn't done a real comedy since, I guess, Scoop in 2006. But maybe that's exactly why he wants to do this?

Back to 2001, Hugh Jackman starred in Kate & Leopold. He was amazing in that one and was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Leading Man in Comedy. I thinkit's a smart move to not stick with Wolverine for the rest of his life and do movies of different genres. Enough is enough, I think he's done with Wolverine and he really should left him behind now that people still love him as the superhero mutant. Personally, I'm really excited with these news. It sounds like a good comedy and Hugh can definitely pull it of. He was hilarious at the Oscars, Flushed Away, Happy Feet and I'm sure he'll do an amazing job in Avon Man.

Hey if this guy can play both a famous gay songwriter (The Boy from Oz) and a pumped up superhero, you can easily expect to see him in comedies like Kate & Leopold and this. Good for him. He's a versatile actor who isn't going to be pigeon holed. More power to him.

He can do that easy, he's not 2 dimensional like the redundant Marvel franchise he was involved in.

Someone removed my post when I said "Hugh Jackman is gay"..lol..so okay..Broadway, Avon Man, singing-dancing, and then Wolverine? Just doesn't seem to fit..I like him as an actor though

This will be cool. It's Hugh's answer to Mel Gibson's "What Women Want". He's a good actor that can lose himself in a role….a la Johnny Depp!

I'm not that fond of him but this sounds like a good concept and I think he would play it well. As long has it's more quirky than a big blockbuster comedy, it sounds like it has a lot of great potential.
