David Cronenberg Leaves Matarese Circle to Make Cosmopolis

Auteur David Cronenberg has announced that his next film will be an adaptation of Don DeLillo's novel "Cosmopolis" instead of the Robert Ludlum movie The Matarese Circle. That previous project was set to go into production soon as well, but the THR report on this news says that they'll "start shooting in 2010 in New York and Toronto." Yet to be cast, the story in "Cosmopolis" revolves around the 28-year-old billionaire named Eric Packer who crosses the whole of Manhattan in a stretch limo just for a haircut. It sounds like an interesting story, now it's just a matter of finding the right actor for the film. Read on for more details.
In the story in the book, he encounters the presidential motorcade, antiglobalization demonstrations, and a celebrity funeral, therefore causing the trip to last most of the day. Packer then decides to conduct business as usual using the limo as his office and summoning advisors, his wife, his one-day-stands, and even his physician into the car in what sounds like the best kind of Howard Hughes extravagance without the Howard Hughes reclusiveness. This could be a really fun and somewhat experimental (it's Cronenberg, come on) film. Looking forward to the first bit of casting news on this - maybe Joseph Gordon-Levitt?
Note: There is still a chance that Cronenberg could directed both The Matarese Circle and Cosmopolis, as it doesn't specifically say that he's detached himself from any project yet and he might have time to do them.

Sounds like Forrest Gump. I'd be more interested in The Matarese Circle but it's cool that Cronenberg is trying some new things.

The story sounds whacked out enough to please the Baron of Blood! And the movie's apparently Tom-Cruise-free, so all the better.

If it were ANYBODY except Cronenberg (or maybe Carpenter) I would say this has bullsh*t written all over it…faith in the talented will prevail so I'll wait and see on this one…

I wanna see Cronenberg get back to whacked out sci-fi/horror a la The Fly, Videodrome, Scanners, The Brood etc… Don't get me wrong I love everything he does, but sometimes when something works it works really well and Cronenberg + horror = GOLD!!!

If Cronenberg directs this, I will watch it. Otherwise, no way!
I hope he doesn't work on The Matarese Circle, or with Tom Cruise. Seriously, Cronenberg is too good for that rubbish.
I wish he'd return to his surreal, allegorical roots.
