Dr. Seuss Book The Lorax to Become a 3D Animated Movie
July 29, 2009
by Alex Billington
Just in case that Horton Hears a Who! movie wasn't enough, Universal has teamed up with Illumination Entertainment to adapt another Dr. Seuss book, this time The Lorax, into a 3D CGI animated feature (just like Horton). First published back in 1971, The Lorax is narrated by a greedy entrepreneur who, despite warnings from the tree-loving Lorax, strips a forest of its stock of Truffula trees to manufacture clothing. The results are catastrophic as all the animals leave and nothing's left. Universal's feature version of this will be co-directed by three different directors: Chris Renaud (Despicable Me), Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio.
"Ted Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss) was prescient in an uncanny way when he wrote the book and explored themes of greed and how that can lead to the destruction of environment," Illumination's Chris Meledandri told Variety. Meledandri was the same person who developed Horton Hears a Who! at Fox before he formed Illumination, so you might as well think of this as the unofficial follow-up. Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio also signed a four year writing and directing deal after writing Horton and Despicable Me. The Lorax movie is scheduled for release on March 2nd, 2012, which is the 108th birthday of Dr. Seuss, who died in 1991.

I think this could be a good movie…if done with some dignity. Don't dumb it down or make it a kiddie movie, like Horton Hears a Who.

This is my favorite Dr. Suess story by far. It's almost morbidly optimistic in that the Once-ler, I think it was, totally screwed everything up and ruined the whole region but at the end that kid still had the potential to fix it and stuff. I hope they don't dumb it down or anything. Horton Hears a Who kind of lends itself to some humor and stuff but this is a totally different tone and style. Much darker. It's like the Batman Begins to Horton Hears a Who's Batman, or something.
It'll just have to be a bit of a departure, you know?

The Lorax remains my favorite Dr. Seuss story. I'm glad that it's getting big screen treatment for a wider audience. The story and message is so important for our world and our society. The closest on-screen analog would probably be WALL-E with it's environmental message. One thing, DO NOT dumb it down! Take it seriously, not childishly.
