Must Watch: Second Full Trailer for Hayao Miyazaki's Ponyo
July 31, 2009

Yet another full-length trailer for Hayao Miyazaki's Ponyo has debuted today just two weeks before it finally hits US theaters. I had the chance to see Ponyo recently and it is a truly wonderful film. It harkens back to Miyazaki's older, more kid-focused work, like My Neighbor Totoro and Kiki's Delivery Service. I also had the chance to meet and interview Miyazaki, so stay tuned for that. Even though this is a very much a kids movie, adults can still enjoy it, especially if you're looking for something just to sit back and escape from reality with for a few hours. Anyway, check out this trailer and catch Ponyo in theaters soon. Enjoy!

An animated adventure centered on a 5-year-old boy and his relationship with a goldfish princess who longs to become human. You can also check out an old Japanese teaser trailer right here if interested.
Ponyo on the Cliff is both written and directed by master animator Hayao Miyazaki, of Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and Howl's Moving Castle previously. The film was animated at the legendary Studio Ghibli. This was released in Japan last summer and was a huge hit at the box office. Disney is bringing Ponyo on the Cliff, now known as just Ponyo, to theaters on August 14th.

Like most Miyazaki, some of the creepiest imagery ever…. that will be nothing short of great

I don't know, I just really dislike the English voice actors. They seem to never get it right. Except for Spirited Away and especially Howl's Moving Castle. Princess Mononoke is a nightmare.

I'll see this in the theater, but from the trailer I'll say that the voice acting doesn't seem that great in the english version. I guess I'm biased cause I prefer subtitles anyway, and I guess kids aren't going to be able to read subtitles, so there's no getting around it. I'll probably see it again in the theater. Fantastic flick, tho. All I had seen before watching the film was a poster, but this trailer does give off the right sort of vibe for the movie. The flick is up there with Totoro in just about every way. If you're a kid you'll love it. If you're a parent, not only will you love the movie but the fact that it's not overly annoying / cutesy, while at the same time there are no really immature jokes or anything like that in the film. Most US 'family' films and animation (save some of Pixar's stuff) have lots of innuendo and fart jokes and shit like that. This film has absolutely none of that - like all of Miyazaki's work. Children's films like this are rare, even in Japan. Wish more creators made films like this.
You got a chance to talk to Miyazaki, eh? He and Takahata are on my list of people to meet at some point.

Hayao Miyazaki: Living proof that not every f'in animated movie needs to be in 3D.
Love Miyazaki's work, can't wait to see this.
Also #2, I didn't think Mononoke was a 'nightmare' - Billy Crudup was perfect as Ashitaka, and even Billy Bob was a decent pick for the character. For whatever reason, his films are of the few animes that I don't mind watching the dubbed versions of.

Download and watch the Japanese subbed version, it's beautiful and the voice acting just sounds better and makes more sense - inflection, tone etc, it's just something dubbing cannot duplicate.

The voice acting doesn't sound that great, agreed with most… however aside from that Tron trailer this is literally the only other movie that is on my "excited" radar. I wonder if my 2.5 year old would be able to sit in a theater to watch it?

Holy shit! This is awesome! I saw Spirited Away when I was young and got the shit scared outta me cause of that evil spirit with the mask and not too long ago I saw Howl's Moving Castle. I REALLY need to see this and the rest of Miyazaki's work!

I saw that Spirited away movie on a recommendation from a friend, I will never watch another movie that guy suggests. That movie was so stupid, it offended everything I love about being entertained. I even fell asleep at the end it was so drab and dumb and boring. I cant believe people over the age of 10 watch these things. I dont know I guess whatever turns you on, I for one like stuff that you dont have to be on crack or autistic to enjoy.

Richard… I honestly feel sorry for you. Open up your mind a little bud, not everything has to be as badass and fucking awesome action packed like Transformers or Batman to be entertaining.

I've watched the Japanese version and it's absolutely amazing!! And yes I agree, the voice acting is much better in the Japanese version. There are few dubbed animes that are better than their subbed versions, unfortunately this is not one of them. They've also changed how Sosuke calls his mom and dad by their first names which gives their relationship a whole different feeling and meaning. And they both sound a lot older in the trailer too. I think you've got to watch subbed version to really enjoy this film.
