New Screenwriter Hired for Max Brooks' World War Z Movie

World War Z

Now this is a bit strange. Fangoria reports today that the World War Z adaptation in the works over at Paramount is being revised by a different screenwriter. Originally, it was J. Michael Straczynski who had been adapting Max Brooks' book, but now it's Matthew Michael Carnahan, a "specialist in political thrillers" whose past credits include State of Play and The Kingdom. “He’s one of Hollywood's hot A-list writers, so if they went after him and paid him a mountain of gold, it definitely shows their confidence in this project,” Brooks said. We know Marc Forster is directing, but we didn't know there were problems with the script?

A Better First Look at Wes Anderson's Fantastic Mr. Fox

Wes Anderson's Fantastic Mr. Fox

Iron Man 2 isn't the only movie we have a new batch of photos from today! FilmsActu has dug up a high res set of photos from Wes Anderson's Fantastic Mr. Fox. The very first photo of Anderson's Mr. Fox, voiced by George Clooney, ended up on the web last week. But Fox (isn't it ironic that they're distributing this?) had us pull the photo down because it had made its way back to Anderson and had made him pretty upset that a bad photo like that was the first thing everyone was seeing. However, we now have two bigger and better photos from Fantastic Mr. Fox today that are worth checking out. I'm still quite excited for this!

First Look: Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow in Iron Man 2

Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow

We finally got our hands on some new, clean versions of the two photos that were first revealed yesterday on Entertainment Tonight. EW.com has released the full cover shot from their latest issue ("second annual Comic-Con preview issue"), which features Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, Mickey Rourke as Whiplash, and Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow aka Natasha Romanoff, from Jon Favreau's Iron Man 2. "The men want it to be, like, 'Ooh, the girls are fighting over Tony,' but it's not as standard as that," explains Gwyneth Paltrow of the Pepper Pots vs Black Widow dynamic in this one. Scarlett looks much better on this cover!

With Half-Blood Prince, Finally, Harry Potter Has Breath

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

It's an odd thing, Harry Potter. As someone who is fairly well read and someone who tries his best to stay abreast of the now and the verge of geek culture, Harry Potter and the seven novels that contain him were never high on my "To Read" list. When the first book was released, I can't say I remember even noticing. Upon the second novel's release, I remember picking up the first, thumbing through it, sitting down with it -- but ultimately returning it to my sister's shelf. She, three years younger than me, was more ably taken by the books. She identified more with the characters; characters who, for all intents and purposes, were

Watchmen Director's Cut Theatrical Re-Release Theater List

Watchmen Director's Cut

Back in June it was confirmed that the extended Director's Cut of Zack Snyder's Watchmen would still be hitting movie theaters starting on Friday, July 17th, which is tomorrow. Unfortunately, it would only show in four theaters located in Los Angeles, Dallas, Minneapolis, and New York City. For anyone living in those cities, great news, for everyone else, well, the Blu-Ray hits shelves next Tuesday. Here are the theaters (and links to buy tickets) for this weekend: Mann Chinese 6 in Los Angeles, Landmark Sunshine 5 in New York, Carmike Apple Valley 15 in Minneapolis, and Rave Hickory Creek 16 in Dallas. If you live in LA, read on!

Director Seth Gordon is Taking on Frank Portman's King Dork

King Dork

Filmmaker Seth Gordon, who we interviewed last year, has lined a number of comedy projects following Four Christmases, which he directed last year. He's got a feature version of The King of Kong documentary, which was his break out hit, in the works; Suicide Squad, about a heist gone wrong at the Kentucky Derby; and Mr. Romance, a comedy about a competition where men compete to see who has the highest "romantic IQ." Add to that list King Dork, an adaptation of Frank Portman's novel of the same name. Will Ferrell and Adam McKay's Gary Sanchez Production is developing the project at Sony for Gordon to eventually direct.

Nicolas Cage Wants to 'Reconceive' the Ghost Rider Sequel

Ghost Rider

Is that even a real word? Nicolas Cage just told MTV in a recent interview that, "I would like to do a reconceive" on Ghost Rider 2. If you remember (you probably don't), back in January it was reported that Sony was moving forward with a Ghost Rider sequel, despite the pleas of fans everywhere to forget it and move on. Cage added in the interview that, "I would like to go in a whole other direction, and I think that’s what they’re talking about." He didn't want to say much more, but from the sounds of it, it seems like they (or maybe just Cage) want to reboot (which is another word for "reconceive") this franchise in a sequel.

First Very Crappy Photos of Scarlett Johansson in Iron Man 2

Scarlett Johansson in Iron Man 2

I'm ashamed that I'm even posting these photos, but they are our very first look at Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow in Jon Favreau's Iron Man 2. Unfortunately the world just can't wait until Friday (two days!) for the actual issue of Entertainment Weekly to hit newsstands and cleaner scans of the cover and whatever photos may be inside to be posted online. No, we have to desperately post these screenshots of a TV screen where Entertainment Tonight showed early photos of the new EW that contained a cover photo with Scarlett Johansson and Mickey Rourke and Robert Downey Jr. all together. That's all I'm going to say - take a look!

Skarsgard and Bosworth Cast in Rod Lurie's Straw Dogs

Alexander Skarsgard

We've already heard quite a bit about this Straw Dogs remake before. James Marsden is set to star and Nothing But the Truth director Rod Lurie wrote the screenplay and is directing. And now Alexander Skarsgard has joined the cast as well as Kate Bosworth. Marsden plays a Hollywood screenwriter who relocates with his wife to her hometown in Mississippi. Bosworth plays the wife, who left the South to become an actress and returns home so her husband can finish his script in quiet. Skarsgard plays her high school boyfriend, an ex-football hero who sees the return of his former girlfriend as a way to reclaim glory.

Darren Aronofsky Update: RoboCop Delays, Black Swan Update

RoboCop - Darren Aronofsky

Hollywood Reporter's Risky Biz Blog ran an article earlier today about filmmaker Darren Aronofsky and what he might be up to next. As we announced back in June, Aronofsky is attached to direct a ballet thriller called Black Swan with Natalie Portman attached to star. In addition to providing some updated details on the financing and development of that project, THR's Steven Zeitchik tries to figure out what's going on with the RoboCop reboot that Aronofsky has also been attached to since last year. With Black Swan potentially going into production later this year, RoboCop could get delayed or worse - Aronofsky could be replaced.

Willem Dafoe Joining Andrew Stanton's John Carter of Mars

Willem Dafoe

Veteran actor Willem Dafoe is the latest to join the cast of Andrew Stanton's John Carter of Mars movie in development at Disney/Pixar. In the story of a Civil War soldier transported to the red planet where warring races vie for control, Dafoe will play Tars Tarkas, a leader of the Thark race who knows that the only way his people can survive is if they turn away from war, a position that may cost him dearly. Jim Morris and Colin Wilson are producing John Carter, which will start shooting in early 2010. Dafoe has played almost everything - a vampire, a supervillain, now a martian, too. He's a great addition to the cast.

Check This Out: Awesome Teaser Poster for Zombieland

Zombieland Teaser Poster

A whole bunch of new posters have hit in the last few days, but this is the one I wanted to feature the most. Before I go on, though, Focus also put out a nifty QR code poster for Shane Acker's 9 - check that out here. However, this dark, gritty poster you see below is obviously for Zombieland, the new zombie movie from Ruben Fleischer. I'm sure we'll see another poster closer to the release that features the faces of Woody Harrelson and Jesse Eisenberg, but until then, we've got this work of art to marvel at. In case you missed either of these, you can watch the first trailer or read our report from the set of Zombieland as well.
