First Look: Mickey Rourke in Sly Stallone's The Expendables

Mickey Rourke in Sly Stallone's The Expendables

Its been a while since we last saw anything from The Expendables, which I believe is already finished shooting (and if it isn't yet, it will be finished soon). However, Empire has the newest shot, featuring a burly Mickey Rourke tattooing the back of Sylvester Stallone. Rourke has been showing up in movies left and right since winning everyone over again in The Wrestler. I don't know if he just has a brief cameo in the movie (and this is it that we're seeing) or whether he'll show up later on, tattooing more of the Expendables team. Either way, this is pretty damn cool to see, so check out the photo below and more info as well. Dig it!

Bob $tencil at Comic-Con 2009: Disheveled Sunday Mess

Bob Stencil

While I did have a lot of fun at the Lost panel, I never did get to the bottom of the time paradox at the end of last season. So on Sunday I asked the only panel worth a damn that the Con had left. You see, Sunday is the 4th day of Comic-Con, and it's like the 3rd day in Vegas. You find yourself hung-over, milling around on sore feet through a mess of people, the big colorful signs that once wooed you in, now seem to laugh in your face; you are disheveled, out of money and wondering when the hell this became a place for kids. I could go on about this but I met an expert who specializes in expressing negative emotions, so I just left it up to him.

Ben Affleck Gearing Up to Direct 'The Town' with Jon Hamm

Ben Affleck - Prince of Thieves - Jon Hamm

One of my favorite up-and-coming directors, Ben Affleck, is gearing up to start shooting his second film. Yes, I'm sort of making a joke, as this is the same Ben Affleck who is also an actor, but he last directed Gone Baby Gone, one of my favorite films of 2007. THR confirms today that Affleck is getting ready to start shooting The Town, an adaptation of Chuck Hogan's novel "Prince of Thieves," starting in September. He has cast "Mad Men's" Jon Hamm and actress Rebecca Hall in the film and will star in it as well. This project was announced almost a year ago. I'm thrilled to see that Affleck is getting behind the camera again.

Richard Linklater Might Direct 'Liars (A-E)' for Miramax

Richard Linklater

Richard Linklater is one of those directors who I will always be fond of, no matter what he does, or how experimental he goes. Even though his latest feature film, Me and Orson Welles, still hasn't been picked up since it debut at the Toronto Film Festival last year, he might have his next project already lined up - and it's not that Dazed & Confused sequel or School of Rock sequel. Linklater is nearing a deal to direct Liars (A-E) for Scott Rudin and Miramax. The screenplay, written by Emma Forrest, is a romantic comedy about a woman who, on the way to President Obama's inauguration, retrieves lost items from her ex-boyfriends.

G4's Gears of War Movie Interviews: Cliffy B and Len Wiseman

G4's Gears of War

While the rest of us at Comic-Con were in Hall H all day long, G4 spent their time talking with celebrities left and right. One of their latest features is an interview set with both Gears of War video game designer Cliff Bleszinski and the director of the upcoming movie, Len Wiseman. We've heard lots about this proposed Gears of War movie, but not that it was actually happening anytime soon. However, from the sounds of it (and this video), it seems like it's creeping along inches at a time, and finally getting close to moving into production. With that said, take a look at what Cliffy B and Wiseman had to say about the project. Read on!

Must Watch: First Trailer for Thomas Jane's Dark Country

Dark Country

The first trailer for Thomas Jane's directorial debut Dark Country has finally arrived online courtesy of ShockTillYouDrop. Dark Country stars Thomas Jane, Ron Perlman, and Lauren German. It's about two newlyweds who run into some troubles while out driving in the desert. Jane has promised that it'll "remain true to the stylistic choices of film noir, while delivering an immersive reality and visceral experience that only the next generation of 3D cinematography could provide." Unfortunately, it's not going to be in 3D, as Sony is putting it out straight-to-DVD, but it still looks pretty good. Anyway, check out the trailer below!

Warren Ellis Writing a New King Arthur Movie Called Excalibur

Warren Ellis

Although Comic-Con has officially wrapped up, there is still plenty of news coming out of there. One story that slipped through the cracks comes from prolific comic book author Warren Ellis, who announces on his own official blog that he's writing a new script for Hollywood Gang, the producers of 300, called Excalibur that's about King Arthur. He doesn't give too many more details, but does say that his treatment is called "Untitled Arthurian Project" and that he's "working directly with Gianni Nunnari, Oliver Kramer and Craig Flores." Hollywood Gang also recently optioned Ellis' graphic novel Ocean. Read on for more.

Rowdy Red Band Trailer for The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard

The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard

This newest red band trailer for The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard is a lot better than the previous tame and lame version. This newer one is a lot more rowdy and a lot more vulgar, but of course, that's what they need to show people to get them into theaters - because I don't think anyone wants to even see this. I know I don't. The comedy in this just looks terribly stupid, nothing at all in it looks funny, not even Jeremy Piven or Ed Helms. But that's probably just me, and I'm sure a lot of other people will probably enjoy it and I've got no problems with that. Anyway, if you want a better sense of what this will be like, then watch this trailer.

Comic-Con: Thoughts on Richard Kelly's The Box Footage

Richard Kelly's The Box

One thing from Comic-Con that I really want to talk about is the presentation for Richard Kelly's The Box during the Warner Brothers panel on Friday morning. In terms of the Q&A session, it wasn't that exciting, and Cameron Diaz actually revealed a huge spoiler for the movie right on stage (which we're not going to repeat), but what I was most intrigued by was the footage. We all saw the trailer back in June, and there is some weird stuff going on it, but you just wait, that's only the tip of the iceberg. Kelly brought a new sizzle reel cut just for Comic-Con and it was pretty fascinating and I'd like to get into it more because of that.

Comic-Con: Take a Look Inside of Flynn's Arcade, Circa 1982

Flynn's Arcade

One of the highlights of Comic-Con this year is easily the Flynn's Arcade viral for Tron Legacy. Without a doubt, the greatest viral marketing stunt at Comic-Con, which is quite an achievement. I stopped by Flynn's Arcade for a second time on Saturday night, where the line extended around the block, to snap a few better photos of what the atmosphere and insides of this highly secretive and special place looked like. Everyone I talked to who stepped foot in here came out with a huge smile on their face. Many said it took them back to their childhood. And of course, it ended with a very exciting look at what's to come in the future. Read on!

Comic-Con: Andy's Thoughts on Neill Blomkamp's District 9

District 9

Last week during Comic-Con, we were invited to a special screening of District 9. As I was sitting in the theater waiting for the film to start, a slow roar of applause began to echo throughout the theater. Peter Jackson himself, along with Neill Blomkamp and Sharlto Copley (the star of the film) had arrived to inform us that this was the very first screening of District 9, and to remind us how thrilled they were for us to be there watching it. I was very excited, to say the least, and now I want to let you know what I thought. We were asked by Peter Jackson himself to keep a lot of the details under wraps, so this will be spoiler free!

Richard Kelly's Next Script is Set in Manhattan, Uses Motion Capture

Richard Kelly

It all began with a Tweet: "My new script is done - it's just... expensive." Despite following up Donnie Darko with the rather mediocre Southland Tales, Richard Kelly is still one of my favorite directors, and I'm very much looking forward to The Box - especially after the footage we were shown at Comic-Con. But as always, we're always interested in what everyone is doing next, and thankfully SlashFilm has uncovered some very interesting new details. Apparently Kelly's new script takes place in 2014 and is a thriller set in Manhattan. And the reason it's so expensive - "forty percent of it is motion capture." Sounds like it could be cool?
