The Academy Makes Changes to the Best Picture Voting Rules

Oscar Statues

Back in June, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced that there would be 10 Best Picture nominees instead of 5 at the upcoming 82nd Academy Awards being held next February. To this day still, that decision causes heated debates among film fanatics, mainly because we don't yet know the kind of impact it will have, and every week we see new movies that have the potential to make it in as a nominee (District 9? Inglourious Basterds?). However, the Academy has announced new voting rules today for members that may effect the final outcome in a big way. It's confusing, but we'll do our best to explain.

20th Century Fox Moving Forward on a Fantastic Four Reboot

Fantastic Four

Fox fires back. Following the surprising announcement this morning about Disney acquiring Marvel, Fox has announced that they're moving forward on rebooting the Fantastic Four franchise that director Tim Story ruined twice already. Screenwriter and producer Akiva Goldsman (Poseidon, I Am Legend, Hancock) has been hired to oversee the reboot as producer. The studio has also hired Michael Green, a co-executive producer on "Heroes" who also co-wrote the Green Lantern movie, to write the new screenplay. No word yet on exactly what they're planning to change this time around, but it will certainly be scrutinized by the fans.

Keanu Reeves Joins Malcolm Venville's RomCom Henry's Crime

Keanu Reeves

I'm sure some of you will say that it's better Keanu Reeves is cast in a romantic comedy than as Spike in the Cowboy Bebop adaptation. But I fear he'll still take on both roles, whether you like it or not. Variety has announced that Reeves will produce and star in Henry's Crime, a project being directed by Malcolm Venville, who's directing debut was the indie film 44 Inch Chest. In the Capraesque romcom, scripted by Sacha Gervasi (The Terminal), Reeves will play a bighearted man who is falsely accused of robbing a bank in Buffalo. The picture will be financed through private equity. No distribution has yet been set for the film.

Sound Off: Do You Want to See Pixar Make Marvel Movies?

Pixar Animation Studios - Marvel

Being a Pixar fanboy myself, I keep getting into discussions today about Pixar's involvement in the big Disney-Marvel acquisition. Not only is the relationship between Disney and Pixar being referenced as an example of the kind of relationship that Marvel has with the Mouse House (as in, they still remain in creative control over their own company). But, of course, everyone is bringing up the possibility of seeing Pixar make Marvel movies. In fact, John Lasseter, who now works specifically at Disney (and not Pixar) supposedly met with Marvel last week and was jumping up and down and got "pretty excited, pretty fast."

First Look: Amanda Seyfried in Atom Egoyan's Drama 'Chloe'

Amanda Seyfried in Atom Egoyan's Chloe

The NY Times has yet another first look at an upcoming Toronto Film Festival film with a few new photos. Chloe is the latest film from director Atom Egoyan and is his "most emotionally direct and accessible work" since the The Sweet Hereafter. It stars Amanda Seyfried as Chloe, an escort that Catherine (Julianne Moore) hires to seduce her husband (Liam Neeson) and test his loyalty. As described by TIFF, it's a "highly entertaining, mind-bending tale of sexual jealousy in which appearances belie the truth – perhaps." And based on these photos and that synopsis, it's a film I'm already planning to see at the fest in a few weeks.

Guillermo on Hobbit 3D Rumors, His DP Choice, and Avatar

Guillermo del Toro

Remember that rumor from a few weeks ago that The Hobbit might end up being shot in 3D? Yea, it's not true. That's why it was a rumor - it was a bit hard to believe. Our friends at TheOneRing.net put in an e-mail with the big man himself, Guillermo del Toro, and got confirmation that they are not pursuing 3D on The Hobbit. After getting that out of the way, GdT did also confirm that they're hiring Oscar winner Guillermo Navarro (of Pan's Labyrinth, Night at the Museum, Hellboy II) as the Director of Photography of Hobbit. He also drops a juicy tidbit about James Cameron's Avatar, to keep news on that going this week as well.

Sony Starts Development on Bad Boys 3, Hires a Screenwriter

Bad Boys

Oh hell yes! Sony has started development on a third installment of the Bad Boys franchise that the one-and-only Michael Bay launched years ago. The studio has hired newcomer Peter Craig, who wrote Ben Affleck's The Town and is also writing the Cowboy Bebop movie, to write the Bad Boys 3 screenplay. The hope is to have a script that would reunite director Michael Bay, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and stars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. At this point, with the project only being in the early stages, none of them have a deal to return just yet. But we can be sure Sony will be going after them and is also readying backups.

Nu Image Gives Sylvester Stallone's Rambo 5 the Greenlight

Sylvester Stallone - Rambo

Wow. To be honest, I never thought this would happen. Variety reports that Nu Image/Millennium Films has greenlit a fifth Rambo movie following the fourth Rambo movie from 2008. The upcoming project's storyline revolves around Rambo fighting his way through human traffickers and drug lords to rescue a young girl abducted near the US-Mexico border. Production will start in the spring after Sylvester Stallone wraps up The Expendables. Stallone will also be back to direct and may also write the sequel. The first Rambo, titled First Blood, hit in 1982, and was followed by First Blood II in 1985, and Rambo III in 1988.

First Look: Nicole Kidman & Aaron Eckhart in Rabbit Hole

Nicole Kidman in Rabbit Hole

The NY Times (via The Playlist) has the first two photos from John Cameron Mitchell's Rabbit Hole, an adaptation of David Lindsay-Abaire's Pulitzer prize-winning stage play about a suburban mother dealing with the loss of a child. The project was first announced back in April and is a small $10 million indie shot in New York that stars Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart, directed by the same guy who made Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Shortbus. "When I first responded to it, it was because I read it, and it was about grief, which fascinates me," Kidman said. "Loss and love seem to be themes that run through my work."

Jerry Bruckheimer Picks Up Derek Haas' Short Story 'Shake'

Derek Haas

Jerry Bruckheimer has just bought the rights to a short story written by screenwriter Derek Haas called Shake. Haas will now expand the story into a feature screenplay. The deal was made for more than seven figures (holy sh*t!), which is a huge pay day for Haas. This all came together because Haas launched a site called PopcornFiction.com, which Bruckheimer visited, loved the story Haas wrote about an FBI agent who, while chasing a killer, begins to lose control of his own body, then bought the idea for a potential Disney production. Now that's a success story. You can still read the short story on the website for the time being.

Worth Watching: Visual Effects: 100 Years of Inspiration Video

Star Wars

I don't know a good way to introduce this. It's one of those great videos that you just need to watch simply based on the title alone. It's called Visual Effects: 100 Years of Inspiration - a "5th-grader-friendly" collection of clips and making-of footage from notable visual effects films of the past century. YouTube user bengraphics says it was "originally intended for educational use as an introduction to a classroom lecture." It's pretty damn awesome to see and will definitely be nostalgic for anyone that loves great visual effects. I first found it on Awards Daily but apparently it also came from Cinematical before that. Watch this now!
