New Updates from David Twohy on Another Riddick Movie
August 2, 2009

Last summer, Vin Diesel promised that we'd see more Chronicles of Riddick movies sometime in the near future. We didn't hear anything until this March, when Diesel spoke again about the status, saying that a third film was "underway" and he was just waiting on a new script from writer/director David Twohy. Well, good news Riddick fans, as ShockTillYouDrop finally caught up with Twohy (he's out promoting his latest film, A Perfect Getaway) and got an interesting update on Riddick from him. "The third movie would be more modestly-scaled and it would probably feel more like Pitch Black then Chronicles," he revealed.
As for whether or not we will actually see another Riddick movie anytime soon, it sounds like Twohy and Diesel are still trying to work out budgeting issues with Universal before moving forward. As he explains:
"I've sketched out two ideas for the next installment," Twohy explained. "Vin and I have decided on one approach of those two, and there's some interest at the studio level but it would be as a PG-13 film, and we don't want to do that anymore. That's one of the concessions we thought we made with 'Riddick' that we shouldn't have made. We also spent too much money and we were too ambitions, so yes, if we do go back to a third one, it will be focused again, hopefully again the same way that 'Pitch Black' was, and we'll spend less money doing it. We're just trying to figure out how much less we can do it for, because I don't think Vin is going to work for scale again."
I'm shocked to know that Twohy feels the exact same way I do! I loved Pitch Black, it's one of my all-time favorite sci-fi films, but I didn't like Chronicles of Riddick that much, and maybe that's because they went too big. "It will always be Riddick-centric. If the question is whether it will be more like the first one than the second one, the difference is that yeah, you can sell it on its creatures and say 'This is a creature fest and we're going to go out as us vs. the creatures' but that's like a lot of different movies." Twohy says that his next project will probably be a Constantine-like thriller called Crying Havoc, not another Riddick just yet.
Even though I wasn't the biggest fan of Chronicles, I'd still love to see another Riddick movie, just because I love the character so damn much. And I'm glad to see Twohy and Diesel fighting to make sure the next one is rated R and not PG-13. I think that could guarantee them a better movie this time around. Thoughts?

Awesome news. I can't speak for everyone, but I personally love the whole Riddick persona and lore. Pitch Black is one of my favorite films of all time, and Chronicles of Riddick wasn't so bad either. The video games, Butcher Bay and Dark Athena, still stand to this day as one of the few movie-to-game series that are not only good, but GREAT. I'm really looking forward to the new Riddick film.

YES, Riddick is one of my Favorite sci-fi characters and his world is just awesome. I think people are crazy that didn't like Chronicles, it was most epic! I also loved Butcher Bat but I never played Dark Athena because it looked like the same thing. The cartoon wasn't my thing but it was bad either. I've been waiting a bit for these to come down on Blu-ray, which one has, so that I can watch them again in all their glory.

Pitch Black was awesome but I hate that people focused on Riddick so much, like that was his movie. It's obviously the same people that didn't watch the specials on Sci-Fi…when it was Sci-Fi. Never the less, Chronicles wasn't bad, it got campy at the end, like they just wanted to finish it. Still, it's the only thing I respect Vin Diesel in so I look forward to it.

Pitch Black wasn't very good since they were getting chased by "birds" but whatever. The Chronicles of Riddick was phat and I welcome another edition.

Another Riddick movie would be awesome, especially if it is like the first one. And damn right, it shouldn't be pg-13…it's too limited. I've been waiting for this for so long, Pitch black made me a Vin Diesel fan instantly.

Pitch Black was awesome, but I think people saw something that wasen't there in the Riddick character. Riddick is just another brooding hero much like Rambo and anything Arnold ever did. Riddick should be action sequence after action sequence with catchy dialogue and as little filler material as possible. Chronicles was ALL filler, while Pitch Black was just straight up great filmaking with a unique concept.

i think they need to go the pitch black route. if anything make a kind of butcher bay movie, the game was fuckin badass. and a prison movie in space with ridick = awesome

Riddick is fucking awesome, and I agree with everyone saying that Towhy needs to rediscover his roots and remeber Pitch Black.
Or Make it like Butcher Bay!

I would like another Riddick film, Pitch Black was an excellent film and to be honest i like Chronicles of Riddick, it was ambitious and i applaud them for that, they probably bit off more than they could chew but i'd rather a film showed ambition than settle for mediocrity

That's great that these guys feel this way. Maybe this will start a trend in Hollywood. I am a big fan of "Pitch Black", but not a fan at all of the "Chronicles" flick! If they were to do a 3rd installment with a smaller budget, then the production will surely get creative like they did for "Pitch Black". Good news so far!

I like the Riddick character a lot. I liked Pitch Black, and Chronicles was okay. I definitely wouldn't mind seeing the character again though, especially if it will be like the first movie.

Defo up for seeing more Vin as Riddick, actually didn't mind the 2nd one, as far as scifi goes it was pretty good, quite a lot going on and the end was almost abruptly finished.

Really? I'd have thought it was an inevitable stance to take if you're trying to get a third film off the ground. If you make two movies, one is a surprise hit and the other a critical disappointment, you're going to try to sell the third as being more akin to the successful film, surely?

Pitch Black was excellent however the chronicles of riddick was pants and I very much doubt the third film will be any better, best to be left well alone.

Personally I prefered Chronicles to Pitch Black. I though it was much more intense and epic.

Ptich black vs. chronicles? I admit that i like both (i own the boxed set) but to me, chronicles is a much better movie. in acting, production, and deliver's the goods. more than anything, the character's dont lose thier identity. an example would be: riggs from Lethal weapon bad ass psycho in LW1, lovable muppet in LW3, punching bag in LW4… riddick stays riddick. i'd love to see bounty hunters after him again.
but, i'm more curious how they include or remove the necromongers from the story. is he still the leader ? did he give it up? etc…

Chronicles was a little over the top in the same way that Transporter 2 was. (Flipping the car to use a crane hook to snag the bomb, crashing the plane into the ocean and it not breaking apart) Lets get serious people, Riddick is bad ass but he's not a god, he's a dude. A dude who could kill you with a teacup. The third one should be sweet.

I don't think that would be a great idea. When I saw the movie in 2004, I said "If they made it any less then what they did here, I would have been more disappointed." I think its ok to go a little over the top just to be safe. Nowadays fans want more from movies and there creators. I think it would be a creative genius for someone to writ ethe next Riddick that is PG-13 and make that good instead of punking out and making R because "We don't want to spen that much money."

Personally I liked Pitch black AND Chronicles. I do think that Riddick went too big too fast, because of becoming a leader of the necromongers. In my opinion they should have ended the movie with Riddick saving kira and the holy guy's family by getting off the planet. Then when they find themselves on another planet he gets caught and sent to butcher bay with the ending scene, him being locked up. Now enter Butcher Bay movie. I think this would have made the Riddick character progression more realistic than becoming the necromonger marshall. They may be able to save the trilogy by having him give the army to Vago (originally trying to take the throne anyways), or disbanding them, or something. Then having him get caught and sent to butcher bay in some way. Unfortunately I don't agree with going back to people vs creature because it's really too horror-esque for Riddick in my opinion. Also the Butcher Bay movie idea is the best I can think of for making a good Riddick movie.

R vs PG, so we don't have to have a plot, just blood, gore, grunting and body parts being flung. Boring! I want a plot with some good writing. We left Riddick, he had it all except his lover. So now he has to pull an Orpheus and travel to the hell and find her and bring her back alive. Could be wonderful. I hope they get the writers to do a good job or it will: sink like a stone, not make any money, and finally kill the franchise. It might be better to put some more dollars in the script and get more dollars at the box office.

It needs to have both no rule that says you cant have awesome gory action with good acting and the whole bit. Scorsese has proved that many times. Plus the essence of Riddick is badassery they need to show him doing some serious shiv action.

very excited to hear this even though pitch black was a lil bit of a ripoff of aliens it still was very original and unique in its own way…the characters in the movie…there wasnt a single one without a flaw…and the tension between riddick and johns was amazing…and the character of riddick was unique u didnt kno what he'd do next…really…except the end we knew he'd at least do something…but he was so uncomfortable and psychotic in the first but just a regular guy with HIGHLY trained skills…in chronicals all they did was give him cheesy one liners and try and think up the coolest things for him to do that are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay past human capabilities…now if the franchise established that before hand in pitch black i'd understand a lil more…also his eyes weren't sensitive enough in the 2nd one he hardly ever had his goggles on and acted like he had no problem with light whereas in the first shine a light into his eyes and you have him down on his knees…also in the 2nd he became a typical hero, in the 1st he was THE deffinition of an anti-hero…there really was no hero in the first until the end and that was unique and bringing together 2 evils in that way(riddick and the alien ripoffs…sry had to say it)…well u just dont see originalness like that in movies anymore

I thought he was still an anti-hero in the second, He wanted to know why there was a bounty on his head and originally went to kill "the holy man" knowing he was the only one that knew where he went or something like that. Anyways he just got caught up in all of that necromonger crap, hence having to fight the big guys.

Frankly, I'm surprised about the R vs PG-13 debate. I thought "Chronicles" was as close to R as you could get with PG-13. I mean, I never thought I'd hear the word "pussy" in a PG-13 movie. And how many people did Riddick kill? Ten? Twenty? A hundred? "Pitch Black" was rated R, but (ironically) less violent than "Chronicles." So I think going R would just mean they throw in more gratuitous violence and profanity, which Riddick doesn't need. I'm not saying to do it PG-13 (although historically, PG-13 movies make more money than R), but I don't think R automatically means better movie.
As far as "Chronicles" vs "Pitch Black" to me, "Pitch Black" was a better movie. "Chronicles" was too big, but also unfocused. First, it was an epic battle with Riddick vs. the Necromongers, then suddenly it became a prison escape movie, then seemed to remember the Necromongers and went back to them in the end. If it had been a prison movie all the way through or had Riddick battle the Necromongers all the way through, it would have been a good movie. Better writing and deeper characterization will make the next one a good movie, R-rating or not.

Doesnt make much sense when someone says " I Really love the character but not the movie " The character made the Movie . I've seen Chronicles of Riddick a hundred times and would probably watch it a hundred more . It was an amazing film imo . And I think they would be right on track if they continued right where the story line left off . Even better if they can manage an R rating . If there was any problem in Chronicles , it was the PG-13 . I'm sure it took a large piece of the movie with it .
