Even Zach Galifianakis is Skeptical About a Hangover Sequel

I think it's finally safe to say that The Hangover is the comedy hit of the year, as its made about $258 million, making it the #4 biggest box office earner of 2009 (so far). Of course, we know they're already making a sequel, as it was announced before this even hit theaters. But is a sequel even necessary? I'm sure some will say no, some will say there's not even another story to tell, but anyone who loved will probably argue that a sequel is a good idea (why not?). But when IGN asked co-star Zach Galifianakis about what he's heard from director Todd Phillips about The Hangover 2, even he sounded skeptical about it.
"He is writing the script. But I haven't seen the script. I'm not running to do The Hangover 2. I told Todd, the last thing I want is the Police Academy chain all of the sudden, where I'm only known from… You've got to be careful with something like that."
"The movie's really good, why bother with a sequel? And I'm not saying that I'm not going to do it. I'm just posing these questions. These are things I ask Todd. Obviously, the reason is executives have Bentleys to pay for. I would love, love, love to work with those guys again. The script has to be good! But I'm working with Todd on a movie we'll be shooting in about six weeks. So I'll do that first, and then we'll see how it goes."
That movie he's doing next is Due Date, which stars Robert Downey Jr. as an expectant father who drags Galifianakis across the country in order to catch his baby's birth. I'm one of those people who thinks that there's really no additional story to tell in The Hangover 2 and they'll probably extended the concept in a way that it shouldn't be extended. For example, they'll probably just repeat an incident like this but in a different city (or a different country) for a different wedding. Who wants to see that all over again but with even crazier incidents? The Hangover was great by itself! But maybe this is why I'm not a screenwriter.
The Hangover 2 isn't due out until 2011, so the writers and director Todd Phillips have plenty of time to think up another story that won't be a repeat of the first. Until then, I'll remain cautiously optimistic. You?

I'm not even sure it's because there isn't an obvious or likable sequel story that this will be questionable. I think the pressure will be, as you did hint in the story, that the sequel will have to be bigger and better than the original. That's the real death knell for me. The first was a great balance of understatement and wackiness, lose the understatement and it falls apart.

Zach seems to be one of the only voices of reason in Hollywood these days. Stop making Franchises and give original ideas a chance. Don't make sequels for the sake of making money!

It will take place on The Honeymoon… that would be my guess. 3 friends go along with couple to Hawaii or whatever and crazy shit happens.

if they really did make a sequel, it'd be interesting to see the actual night of fun they had (that was shown in photos during the credits.) hopefully they'll just drop the idea of a sequel b/c the movie stands just fine on its own.

Best thing with this movie was the opening song, Danzig's song written for Johnny Cash(here preformed by Danzig).
Mediocre collage comedy, not worth the cash for the ticket, I should have rented it, and not wasted a friday night on it.
Total gross is ca. $367,464,397 worldwide? Go figure, ofc there will be a sequel. But, as no#17 said, the photos shown during the credits was abit fun.
The sequel will be like this:
The guys will get drunk at the wedding…and get a Hangover(2)……bleh
