Worth Watching: Clive Owen in The Boys Are Back Trailer
August 6, 2009

by Alex Billington
Miramax has debuted a trailer on Yahoo today for a film I've never heard of called The Boys Are Back starring Clive Owen. This drama is about a father who must learn to become a single parent when his wife suddenly passes away. It's great to see Clive Owen in a non-action movie for once (since I don't really count Duplicity as a complete drama). This looks pretty damn good, but will it be anything memorable? It doesn't look like. Maybe I'm just being too harsh or maybe I'm preparing for the upcoming fall film festivals, since this is premiering up in Toronto. With that said, I still suggest everyone check this out this afternoon.

The Boys Are Back follows a witty, wisecracking, action-oriented sportswriter (Clive Owen) who, in the wake of his wife's tragic death, finds himself in a sudden, stultifying state of single parenthood.
The Boys Are Back is directed by Oscar nominated filmmaker Scott Hicks, of Shine, Snow Falling on Cedars, Hearts in Atlantis, and No Reservations most recently. The screenplay was written by TV writer Allan Cubitt. This is based on Simon Carr's book titled "The Boys Are Back in Town." Miramax is bringing The Boys Are Back to limited theaters on September 25th after its premiere at the Toronto Film Festival.

We cannot say that we did not know Clive Owen could act so finely. Children of Men, after all, was an amazing display of his art. This trailer shows how deep the movie will be, so we can expect no surprises from the film, except for how warmly it touches us. I hope that I am wrong and the film delves deeper into all of us and pulls out some raw emotion. Bravo. I will definitely see this film.

I'm glad to read the reviews of this trailer are mostly positive! I was prepared to defend it by pointing out the values in a movie like this in a culture that is slowly going through a massive gender transformation. As a male who works in a career that is heavily involved with children I'm glad to see a film like this being made….even if on first appearance it looks like it's perpetuating the male stereotype of dads being "fun" and "irresponsible." Truth be told the most impressive thing about this movie is the concept of "Just say Yes" when it comes to letting kids be free to learn and express themselves.
I'm excited to see this one! Looks like this falls dramatic offerings are going to make up for this summers lack decent films.

Number 4 hit the nail on the head, 18 as well. Looks good, and you don't see enough of a single/widowed/or divorced father raising kids on film. (With the exception of Kramer vs. Kramer). I'll be seeing this one.

Dang, I've seen some good trailers today. The fall releases look very promising. And, by the way, see how influencial The Edge has been?

Looks like the first decent Aussie film to be released this year! Fingers crossed it gets some coverage overseas cause the last Aussie film to get international coverage was Wolf Creek, which just makes this country look bad.
