Lookin' Ahead at What Jason Reitman's Got Lined-Up Next

If you're a longtime reader you'll know that we've always been a supporter of Jason Reitman, especially during the release of Juno in late 2007 through to early 2008. His third feature film, Up in the Air, is set to premiere in Toronto next month and already has great early buzz. But as always, being the fans that we are, we want to know what he'll be directing next after he finishes Up in the Air. Variety published an article last night about a new production company that Reitman is launching called Right of Way Films and hidden in there in the middle was a sentence about at least four other projects that Reitman has in development.

I owe a lot of credit for this to my friend Peter Sciretta from SlashFilm, as he did most of the research on these projects and even called me excitedly to tell me about all that he had discovered. So with that, here is a look at the various projects Reitman has coming up, either to eventually produce or direct, sometime soon.

Pierre Pierre - A screenplay written by Edwin Cannistraci and Frederick Seton that ended up in the #11 spot on the 2007 Black List. The story follows a "self-indulgent, lazy, French nihilist who is transporting a stolen Mona Lisa from Paris to London." Through the journey, "he comes to love his home country again." Fox Searchlight paid upwards of $1 million for the screenplay with Reitman attached, but not much has happened. We last wrote about it in May of 2008 but it wasn't mentioned in Variety's article.

Whispers in Bedlam - A comedy written by Matt Spicer and Max Winkler about a football player who receives an experimental surgery and finds himself - and his life - changed forever. The gimmick is that he has hearing problems and after the surgery can hear everyone talking from far distances. It's based on a short story written by Irwin Shaw. Reitman is currently attached as the director.

Bonzai Shadowhands - A comedy written by and starring Rainn Wilson about a once-great ninja who is now living a life of mediocrity as an alcoholic in San Fernando Valley. Along with Whispers in Bedlam, this was setup at Reitman's old production company Hard C before it shut down. It's still in early development with Reitman currently attached as the director.

See Also: Sambo - A screenplay written by Jenny Lumet, of Rachel Getting Married previously. From the WSJ: "I can't really tell you [what it's about]. But what I can tell you is that I'm kind of a multi-culti chick. It's so cloak-and-dagger, oh God, but I can tell you that it's as irreverent as one can manage. I'm so sick of all the sanctity and February [Black History Month] is the holy month and I want to puke my guts out." The title comes from: "I looked up something like mixed race on Wikipedia and that’s [the term] I found."

Duplass Brothers Project - A project with Mark and Jay Duplass, of The Puffy Chair and Baghead previously. It might be their film called Table 19 that Reitman will only produce this time. It's "a story told from the point of view of the collection of strangers grouped together at a wedding's singles table."

That's the line-up, to the best of our knowledge, for Jason Reitman following Up in the Air. Of course, he could end up directing something that's not even on here. Back in early 2008, Peter and I spent months trying to uncover what Reitman's next project would be, including reading every book we thought that he might be adapting and pulling every favor we could. Alas it was eventually discovered by Latino Review that it would be an adaptation of Walter Kirn's novel. I'm sure we'll hear a lot more from Reitman as he makes his way up to Toronto, so stay tuned. Here's to hoping he gets another Oscar nomination this year as well!
