Robert Luketic Attached to Yet Another Barbarella Movie
August 7, 2009
by Alex Billington
Maybe this version of Barbarella might actually happen this time around? THR announces yet another Barbarella movie, this time with Robert Luketic, director of Legally Blonde, 21, and The Ugly Truth, attached instead of Robert Rodriguez. Additionally, newcomer Joe Gazzam, who wrote John Carpenter's upcoming feature Riot, has been brought on board to write a new screenplay. Veteran producer Dino De Laurentiis is still on-board to produce the project. Universal booted Rodriguez last year after they couldn't come to an agreement at all (read all about that here). Now it's Luketic's turn to bring us his Barbarella.
By now you should know all about this, but if not, here's a recap. Barbarella is about a female mercenary who roams the universe of a distant future, undertaking missions that require fearlessness, ingenuity and sensuality. The character first debuted in 1962 in a French graphic magazine written and illustrated by Jean-Claude Forest and was known for her sexual escapades. Luketic's new take on the iconic character will not be campy, though it will keep the sexuality - there will be seductions, but the focus will be on the adventure (or so they say). This is no longer setup at Universal, but is in development under De Laurentiis.

Might be fun, the Barbarella movie was pretty "good".
However I think it will loose some of its speciality because of, well, HD cameras and technology.
Its the same with most old sci-fi/fantasy movies, they are classic because their special effects and grainy look.
Also, sexuality in movies isn't really something new, so I guess that's why the focus more on the adventure than sex.

Barbarella isn't going to be campy?! FAIL. Campy was what made it so much fun.

21 is one of the worst movies I've ever seen.
Not excited for this.
