Worth Watching - Aug 9: Jeff Bridges in The Open Road Trailer
August 9, 2009

by Alex Billington
Now this is an interesting little indie film. The Open Road stars Justin Timberlake, Jeff Bridges, and Kate Mara. Never heard of it? Neither had I until a few months back when it was finally picked up for distribution by Anchor Bay Films. MSN debuted the trailer for this recently and I guess I'd say it doesn't look bad, but I don't know what to make of it. Anytime and indie like this doesn't make it into any film festivals at all, that's probably a sure sign that it's really not that good. But I'll let you be the judge of that, as there's a lot to like about this trailer in an entertainment sense. And of course, it's Jeff Bridges, there's no way I can't love him!
Watch the official trailer for The Open Road:
A tale of a young man looking to reconnect with his long-lost father — a famous baseball legend — and bring him back to the bedside of his ailing mother. Together they embark on a road trip that none of them will ever forget. The cast of this also features Lyle Lovett, Harry Dean Stanton, and Mary Steenburgen.
The Open Road is both written and directed by Texan filmmaker Michael Meredith, of only Three Days of Rain previously. This was shot in Louisiana and Tennessee back in early 2008 and has been waiting to be released since. Anchor Bay Films is finally bringing The Open Road to limited theaters on August 28th.

seems like a pretty overdone/boring story but the acting looks great.

All of the acting is great except for Justin Timberlake. He doesn't seem to fit the role that well as the other actors do in this trailer.

From the little bits this trailer shows, I think Justin Timberlake did a good job. People just need to give him a chance and get past the whole "Lol, NSYNC boygroup douche bag!" crap.
Of course, Jeff Bridges will carry this movie, no doubt. I mean, he's the DUKE, and he's awesome.

Agree with ya #2. I was thinkin' the same thing. I sure wish JT would just stick to his music. Jeff Bridges rocks… He makes this movie work.

People hate on Justin Timberlake so much, but personally I think he's the man. His saturday night lives are amazing, his solo music is decent and he generally keeps his business out of the public eye which is what I really admire about him. Not too many stars that big can pull that off. As for his acting, I haven't been sold on him in anything he's done yet, but he looks good in this. At least in the trailer. Personally I think #2,3,5 and 6 are just hating on JT… Now that I'm done defending the boy bander I have to say that Jeff Bridges looks absolutely fantastic in this. Movie could be a pretty good sleeper.

maybe people south of the mason dixon can understand Bridges but to all the rest of us he needs to spit the marbles out of his mouth. It has to be something special to bring something fresh to the road movie genre–this doesn't look like it.. A solid cast can't save a stale story.

I agree with #15. Something about Timberlake as an actor doesnt sit well with me. Its very very hard for me to see a music star transition to a actor. It doesnt always work and some never get it right. Timberlake looks too tense for that role. They should have given it to someone else like an unknown actor. Timberlake looks more of the type to play like a suprising villian type of role i.e."jokeresqe". I think thats what he needs to do to help viewers get more comfortable with him.

let me also say that i am not a jt hater. I like his music. He needs a comedic role like in SNL or a villian role.
