Jim Carrey Out, But Paul Giamatti In for The Three Stooges?

More updates on the Farrelly Brother's wacky Three Stooges movie. SlashFilm recently discovered an article on Boston.com that has a few interesting casting changes. They're reporting that Jim Carrey, who was originally on-board to play Curly, has since dropped out, but they don't have a replacement just yet. Additionally, they say that Paul Giamatti has signed on to replace Sean Penn as Larry, since he is taking time off from acting. Giamatti seems like one of those "a little too easy" casting choices, as he's pretty much a perfect modern version of Larry, but does that make this any better? Nope, I still hate this entire concept!
We previously ran an article in June about how Peter Farrelly didn't seem confident that the Three Stooges movie would even happen anymore. His fear was that casting would just continue to fall apart after Sean Penn. However, this update today makes it seem like they might be on the right track again, at least signing on Giamatti, but still missing Curly. I have a feeling (or maybe it's just a desire) that this will fall apart once again. It just seems like one of those doomed projects. As much as they'll try, casting big name actors is just asking for too much, and there's no way it'll work out they way the want it. They might as well give up now.

I was a big fan of the ABC/Mel Gibson Project back in the mid 90's. I don't see how it could get much better

I always thought Giamatti would be great as a live-action Homer Simpson.

Perfect casting there but so obvious as you said. Alex, I must say, I actually agree with you 100% on this.

It's all good. Giamatti is a good choice to replace Penn since I could picture Penn being able to handle the slapstick required. In the end, I'm sure the casting choices would turn out to be great–just as they almost, always tend to be!

This is another example of the almighty Hollywood dollar getting out of control. This is a bland, boring, moronic concept that should die before production. Unless this is biographical (and based on the Farrelly bros I'm sure it isn't) I honestly don't think anyone will be interested in the end. Think about it: Farrelly brothers doing a film with "shock comedy", and using a modernized 3 Stooges concept to express their "shock comedy". Talk about easy pickin'. I've heard of "low hanging fruit", but this has zero creativity written all over it.

unless if giamatti's involvment has become more definit, i dont know how true that is, cause last time when the farrelly bros were asked about giammatti replacing penn, they said they would love him but nothing has been set in penn. now with carrey not attached anymore, the film is just going to become more disasturours. Im not saying that carrey's involvement made the film good (infact i felt uncomforatable with him playing curly, so better that he isnt in it anymore), but if they keep having casting problems like this then the film will just become worse and worse (then again one can argue it already has).

The only Stooges I've enjoyed are the references in the first two Lethal Weapon movies, and the "I will show you the Stooges" episode of Seinfeld.
I have no interest in watching this movie which has disaster written all over it.

makes no difference WHO they cast in this.,..LET THIS PROJECT DIE NOW!!! there are some things that deserve to be left alone and unspoiled by some schmuck's desire for a fast buck…the Tree Stooges are the Holy Grail of comedy….leave them be…

Agreed. This is something i just don't want anyone to do. Even if it is the same guys that brought of Dumb and Dumber. From the first time I read about this I've been mildly upset that the show I grew up watching would be beaten up and ruined by a bunch of guys that think they're smarter than the original dudes who in my opinion were pure genius.

the three stooges is my most favorite show of all time and i love the farrelly brothers, so its a good combinarion for me. i just wish that the original cast had stayed, Del Toro, Penn, and Carrey. I really can't picture Giamatti playin Larry. and as for Carrey, if he has in fact dropped out i think that they should maybe get John C. Reilly, shave his head bald, give him a script and start shootin the movie already
