Bill Hader Reveals That the MacGruber Movie Will be Hard-R?!

This can't be true, can it? I'm not a fan of the current era of SNL, so I don't really care about Will Forte's MacGruber or the movie being made about the character, but this news was just too good to pass up. SNL comedian Bill Hader talked with NY Mag recently on the streets of New York and revealed that, remarkably, the script for the MacGruber movie contains plenty of R-rated material. We don't know if Hader is joking or telling the truth, but it sounds like it'll be good either way. Considering this is already gearing up to start shooting soon, I don't think there's time to change it anyway. Here, we'll just let Hader explain himself.
I read the script, and it's like a hard-R comedy, and it totally works. It's hilarious. It's kind of in the vein of, like, eighties action movies, like there's a very definitive bad guy. I don't know if I can talk about the plot too much, but it's hilarious. The thing that kind of blew my mind about it is that it's like a HARD-R movie. I was like, "What is this? This is fucking ugly. You guys are really going to do this?" And they're like, "Yup." And I was like, "That is awesome. That is fucking hilarious."
Very awesome choices of words - "fucking ugly." I don't often ever hear R-rated movies get called "ugly," especially ones based on SNL skits, but damn, I like the sound of that. By comparison, Hot Rod was PG-13, and so was Baby Mama, both recent SNL movies. Can Universal take this kind of risk with MacGruber? I guess they can - or they will whether they like it or not. Jorma Taccone is directing with a script written by SNL's Will Forte and John Solomon. The cast of this includes Will Forte as MacGruber, Kristen Wiig, Ryan Phillippe, and Val Kilmer as the bad guy. Universal has already slated this for release on April 16th, 2010.

Unless it is on par with Tropic Thunder, I don't think this will do that well. I am already consigning it to the SNL offshoot movie bargain bin at the far in between truck stop. McGruber, meet Night at the Roxbury and Corky Romano. Also, Chris Kattan, because he actually lives here under the top layers of DVD's that are constantly rifled through and never bought. Ugh. SNL is trash.

I guess I would be somewhat surprised if MacGruber ends up with a hard-R. I doubt Lorne Michaels would allow it. All of the SNL movies are about reaching into the pockets of teenagers with disposable income.
Then again, MacGruber is a creation of The Lonely Island and Michaels is pretty much bending over backwards these days to keep them on the show.

Everyone is such a bandwagon baby…"I don't Like current snl because my diaper hurts'….
Get a fucking life old man.
Seriously, 90% of SNL's "golden Years" suck hard…seriously, it doesnt hold up at all, the jokes are dated and stale…
The modern era has really talented cats…So try for once to open your mind to something new…oh my god, yeh i fucking said it…
You are prolly the same guy who watched MAD Tv all those years, fucking sheep.

I agree with 4, Hot Rod was a great movie, and was only overlooked because this was before the peek of the Lonely Islands career.

I LOVED Hot Rod! It was absolutely ridiculous, which is always win in my book. =)
So many funny lines and moments. "Have fun being married to SATAN!"
And possibly the greatest riot scene ever.
I'm gonna watch it again right now. =D

I really enjoy SNL, and I think Will Forte and Bill Hader are excellent, as is most of the current SNL cast. MacGruber can work as a movie, in my opinion, and I look forward to seeing what they can do with it. Hot Rod is a very funny movie as well.
