Wolfgang Petersen Directing a Live-Action Paprika Remake?

Where has he been hiding? Wolfgang Petersen, the other German action movie director (not Roland Emmerich), hasn't directed anything since Poseidon back in 2006. He's attached to an alien movie called Uprising at Sony, but there hasn't been any movement on that for a while (as far as I know). Moviehole is reporting (without many details at all) that Petersen is attached to direct a live-action version of Yasutaka Tsutsui's Japanese novel Paprika. Anime enthusiasts may remember that an anime version of the book was produced in 2006. But a big anime remake just doesn't seem like something Wolfgang would do?
Paprika is about a machine that allows therapists to enter their patient's dreams. When the machine is stolen, all hell breaks loose, and only a young female therapist can stop it: Paprika. Apparently it is a very trippy anime (watch the trailer) because it spends so much time in dreams. This sounds strangely similar to Christopher Nolan's Inception (at least regarding the dreams aspect). Maybe this is the inevitable competing project? Oddly, this is the first time we've even heard anything about any this, be it the live-action remake news or Petersen's potential involvement. So for now, I'll remain skeptical, but we'll keep you updated!

It's a pretty mental film with giant building sized cartoon animals running around blowing up cities, they should get Mike Bay to direct it. Just joking. From around the same time a much better film called Tekkonkinkreet was made, I'd rather see that.

Alex, Petersen has a very eclectic back catalogue; he's done fantasy and sci-fi before (NeverEnding Story, Enemy Mine) as well as dramas like Das Boot, so he has a much broader range than Emmerich and it's not realy fair to lump them together. He's often only as good as his material, hence the disappointment of Poseidon (did we really need a remake of that when the original is always on TV anyway?), but this could be good. We need more sci-fi movies. I just wish they were original rather than adaptations…

Satoshi Kon is my favorite Anime-tor of all time…even more then Hayao Miyazaki. His work is always so mindfucking I love it. And his version of Paprika was dead on, for his style and the story's. do not make this live action it will suck so much.
