Valkyrie's Christopher McQuarrie Writing the Wolverine Sequel
August 13, 2009
by Alex Billington
And everyone thought this sequel was going to suck! THR has announced that Oscar winning screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie, of The Usual Suspects, The Way of the Gun, and Valkyrie most recently, has been hired by Fox to write the next Wolverine movie. Hugh Jackman is set to return and will also produce along with Lauren Shuler Donner. The movie's story line will take its cue from the early 1980s Frank Miller / Chris Claremont mini-series, which is set in Japan and has Wolverine dealing with ninjas as he struggles whether to follow his animal killer instincts or a new life under a samurai's code of honor and respect.
This is the first good sign that the Wolverine sequel might indeed be a huge improvement over this year's movie. McQuarrie is a very talented screenwriter who has mentored a lot of young writers in Hollywood. I interviewed him last year for Valkyrie and it was easy to tell from our conversations that he really is a brilliant guy. But then again, Gavin Hood, who directed X-Men Origins: Wolverine, was an Oscar winner as well. But I'll argue that starting with McQuarrie is a great first step in the right direction. Plus, he's miles better than David Benioff, who co-wrote Origins. Now they just need a great director and we'll be all set!

Are there other mutants involved in the Miller storyline in Japan? Just wondering if it's gonna just be Wolverine fighting ninjas or if they're gonna overcrowd it with other mutants like origins was.

Ugh. Japan? Not exactly where I'd like it to be set, but whatever…

Good choice. I'm sure the flick will be good. Singer as director would be a logical choice, but who knows, he might still do it and shove the "Galactica" flick further down his slate. This seems to be the ongoing trend among directors in Hollywood as of late!

The quality level of this movie just went up ten-fold. McQuarrie is no joke.

Well that's the best news I've heard all week. Way of the Gun is underrated and McQuarrie even more so. Here's to another gem in his crown:P Hope it doesn't get butchered. I'll be looking forward to this…

Valkyrie was incredibly awful, and The Usual Suspects was Kevin Spacey's movie, so I'm not sure why this is exciting.

This means ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.
"And everyone thought this sequel was going to suck!"….AND THEY SHOULD. They should be prepared for an insane amount of suckage. Aces have been thrown down on the comic-movie playing table before and have lost their hand at the game. This is no sure-fire success, c'mon. People shouldn't even indulge the notion of a sequel for this…..

We didn't think, as in past tense, we still do. Well I still do. The first sucked, all three of the Xmen sucked, though 2 was the best of the worse, and this will suck. Depressing but it is so.
