Mike Nichols Directing an Adaptation of Highsmith's Deep Water

No, this isn't a remake of the yacht race documentary Deep Water, nor is it a horror film set on open water either. Deep Water is a novel written by Patricia Highsmith in 1957 that is being adapted by Fox 2000. Mike Nichols (of The Graduate, Catch-22, Primary Colors, Closer, Charlie Wilson's War) has been set to direct with Joe Penhall (Enduring Love, The Road) writing the screenplay. In Deep Water, a couple in a loveless marriage hang on through an arrangement whereby the husband permits the wife to take lovers. Suspense builds as those lovers begin dying. Looks like Nichols has some great new projects lined up next.
"An atmosphere of nameless dread, of unspeakable foreboding, permeates every page of Patricia Highsmith, and there's nothing quite like it." In an extension of that original plot description: "Melinda is allowed to take any number of lovers as long as she does not desert her family. Eventually, Vic tries to win her back by asserting himself through a tall tale of murder—one that soon comes true." It sounds like a pretty thrilling story and the novel itself is very highly regarded with nothing but 4 and 5 star reviews on Amazon. It was also announced last year that Mike Nichols would be directing a remake of Akira Kurosawa's High and Low.
