Must Watch: Joe Johnston's The Wolfman Official Trailer!
August 20, 2009
Source: Yahoo
by Alex Billington
Yet another great trailer has debuted this morning, this time for The Wolfman starring Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins, Emily Blunt, and Hugo Weaving. Yesterday we debuted a new batch of photos that just looked awesome and this trailer definitely lives up to those. As I said then as well, I'm not normally a big werewolf guy, but I am frickin' excited for this. It really looks like Joe Johnston was the perfect guy to bring some style and excitement and energy to this remake. This really just looks exceptional - dark and moody and violent and everything. Maybe if that Avatar trailer wasn't your thing, this one will be. Watch this!

Lawrence Talbot, a haunted nobleman, is lured back to his family estate after his brother vanishes. Upon his return and after being reunited with his estranged father, Talbot is bitten and cursed by a werewolf.
The Wolfman is directed by visual effects Oscar winner Joe Johnston, of Honey I Shrunk the Kids, The Rocketeer, Jumanji, October Sky, Jurassic Park III, and Hidalgo previously. The screenplay was co-written by Andrew Kevin Walker (Se7en, 8MM, Sleepy Hollow) and David Self (The Haunting, Thirteen Days, Road to Perdition). Universal is bringing The Wolfman to theaters on February 12th, 2010 early next year.

I agree that the CG effects are a little odd, but otherwise, the look of the film is fantastic. I like the greys and blacks.

This looks awesome. I can see why it's been pushed back so many times. Was still hoping for a thanksgiving release date like planned, but oh well I guess I'll to wait till February. Del Toro looks good in this and the supporting cast looks strong.

Holy f*ck!
@14 - agreed. Tired of CGI bores not getting the point. Some of the CG in Benjamin Button was very noticeable (especially at sea), but it's painterly look suited the film and was a nice artistic flourish. Sort of getting the same vibe here. This is a must see.

This beats the shit out of the AVATAR trailer.
AVATAR too overhyped. Only an epic story can carry that movie now.

AVATAR: C

This looks better than I thought it would. For some reason, I was expecting this to be more like 'Van Helsing' or 'The Underworld' movies or 'League of Extraordinary Gentleman'. This trailer looks like they put considerably more effort into creating a noirish atmosphere. Here's hoping it ends up being a good film, in the final edit.

I think it's funny how 99.99% of trailers for movies with some CGI always has someone saying the CGI is ok or poor or something. I haven't yet seen one where they just enjoy it and let it be.

Looks awesome! There can never be too many monster or zombie movies.
I always liked Benicio Del Toro, he's a great actor. And paired up with Anthony Hopkins and Hugo Weaving, what could possibly go wrong?
I also don't see what's wrong with the CGI, I thought it looked great.
#35 Wtf, the acting looks horrible? You must be joking.
Gotta admit, the "I will kill all of you!" part made me think of Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, seeing how it was the exact same line.
Only this movie looks a LOT better. Can't wait.

@45 This isn't the first time different trailers use the same music. I know lord of the rings and sunshine had it to, and after that another movie had it to but can't remember whichone anymore. I guess they aren't that ordinary anymore in holywood to give it their own stamp. But sometimes the music does make it fit.

Underworld used it more as a threat. I think here it was more used as a warning for everyone to get away from him.

Yeah this looks OUTSTANDING!!!!!! I mean think about it..what was the last truly GREAT werewolf movie that we actually had?( If anyone says Cursed or Blood & Chocolate I will kick you in the nuts!!!!!!) I am sorry Kate Beckinsale fans but the UnderWorlds movie don't even count and even if they did count they would still not be listed as great!
This is really exciting and I hope the movie is as nightmarish, gory, noirish and psychological as the trailer hints. With the Book of Eli and now this…the dead zone months of January-March have really become a hot time of the year for movies!!!! Bout Time

@14 - Do you even know what criticism means? No one is saying they're an expert. But we've all seen many different types of CGI over the years in movies, and so we can offer our opinions/criticisms on what we see.

Looks better than the Avatar trailer. Everything is pretty awesome. And I hope zombies( I don't like zombies, they're not scary at all ) are excluded and that thing from 2:02 it's just the transformation process.

Anyone think the CGI looks fake? READ #14!!!!!!!!
I love how the same little terds that love the Matrix now look at real photos of real actors and start breaking down how fake it looks!!!!!! hahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahah..cough cough..hahahahahahahahaha oh man…you guys are a constant form of humor!!!
anyone seen "American Werewolf in london"? you're gonna tell me those prosthetic effects were better? oh…laugh riot you are!!! EVERYONE is entitled to an opinion, but it should be educated and not just based on your knowledge of transformers and the last two terminators! sheesh…
this looks good, nice period piece..

"I will kill all of you!" I peed my pants a little. One more thing, opinions are like assholes. Everyone's got one and in this case they pretty much all stink. CGI is such a difficult field. As a graphic designer I've experienced first hand how difficult that kind of work is, and I can't imagine all of the work and time that goes into some of those scenes. I mean, an animated short can take as much as a half year and a full team of people working on to finish (one such example being 'Big Buck Bunny' which you can find on youtube and I highly recommend you watch) and realism is much more difficult. While I respect everyone's opinions and certainly their right to have them, don't pass around statements like, 'I could do better' or 'this looks like shit'. You have no idea what you're talking about and it's extremely disrespectful (not constructive criticism as you may have fooled yourself into thinking) to the artists that have poured their blood, sweat, and tears into the project. Sorry for the rant. Thanks.

#65 - I couldn't tell if that was sarcasm or not…but in regards to An American Werewolf in London…ARE YOU SERIOUS???????
That film is THE gold standard of transformation special effects. It looked more real than any CGI we have ever seen in any of these types of movies….Wait a minute…do you work for ILM?!

#69 I was thinking the same. That transformation scene still creeps me out, because it looks so fucking real and…well, kinda gross (bones snapping in position and stuff). >.<
#53 Yeah, I can't really tell from the trailer in what context he is using that line. Could be more like a warning, sure. Doesn't really matter to me, tho. This movie looks awesome, and I am sure I will have a blast. =)
SuicidalOptimist on Aug 21, 2009

#71, I was thinking the same thing!
This movie WILL be great, DEFINITELY more enjoyable than AVATAR just based on how intense and gritty the whole thing looks.
If there is ever an award for "Most downright awesome period piece", this movie will undoubtedly win.
I say we have a right to expect nothing less!
