New Writers for DC's Shazam & DreamWorks' Rainbow Bridge
August 20, 2009
by Alex Billington
A couple of new screenwriter updates today. Warner Brothers has hired former actor Billy Birch and DC Comics writer Geoff Johns to kick-start and co-write a new version of the Shazam! movie that never got off the ground. Birch is the sixth writer to take a crack at adapting the character Captain Marvel following William Goldman (The Princess Bride), Bryan Goluboff (The Basketball Diaries), Joel Cohen and Alec Sokolow (Garfield) and John August (Big Fish, The Nines). Last we heard in back in January, the project was dead, but apparently Get Smart's Peter Segal is still attached to direct and is waiting for the new script.
In other news, Spielberg's new DreamWorks has hired Oscar winning screenwriter Bruce Joel Rubin (Ghost, Jacob's Ladder, The Time Traveler's Wife) to write an English remake of the 2002 Japanese cult hit Resurrection, which has tentatively been re-titled to Rainbow Bridge. Resurrection, or Yomigaeri as it's known in Japanese, is a little-seen supernatural film directed by Akihiko Shiota about a government official sent to a rural town after a child who has been missing for 60 years returns without having aged. In the town of Aso, people who have died mysteriously come back to life, not as zombies but just as regular people.
