Will There Be a Terminator 5? Does Anyone Even Care?
August 21, 2009
Source: LA Times
by Alex Billington
The "talk of the town" this week (besides Avatar) is that the Terminator franchise might be on its last legs. Despite its lackluster performance, the real problems now lie in lawsuits and financial troubles surrounding The Halcyon Company, which picked up the Terminator rights a few years ago. Ben Fritz at the LA Times has a great write-up on the legal issues, which seem to only get worse each and every day. It doesn't help that "no one" is really that interested in seeing more Terminator movies after Terminator Salvation was so bad. So will we even see a Terminator 5? At this point, no one really knows, but it's not looking good.
Here's how Fritz describes the situation that Derek Anderson and Victor Kubicek, the owners of the Halcyon Co., are currently in. "The suits come as the Halcyon Company, owned by Anderson and Kubicek, has been attempting to raise money to keep operating their company, according to several people familiar with the situation. The duo also is in the early stages of development on a fifth Terminator film, two people familiar with their efforts said." How can they be moving forward on Terminator 5 if they don't have any money, it just doesn't make sense? It sounds like these guys won't last much longer and Terminator will go with them.
I wasn't putting much consideration into these lawsuits until I started seeing articles from other industry journalists that I respect and trust, like Geoff Boucher of Hero Complex and Anne Thompson of indieWIRE. Both of them are quite pessimistic as well. Boucher says at the end: "All things considered, I suspect the plug has been pulled on Terminator, maybe for good this time." Thompson suspects pretty much the same: "The recent Halcyon bankruptcy announcement has raised some eyebrows, because it seems bizarre for the producers of the $370 million worldwide grosser Terminator Salvation to be running on empty."
Maybe this is just a sign that we should finally forget about trying to continue on the franchise that James Cameron started 25 years ago and focus on the future, including Cameron's latest work. Although I did enjoy Terminator Salvation and would've liked to see more, the $125 million it made is a sign that the fans have spoken, and they really don't seem to want any more Terminator. It was nice knowing you, John Connor.

i still want to see more, T4 had its problems but it was still much better than T3, so it can only get better

i think most people feel the same on these movies now. if they make a new one who cares if they don't who cares. I thought salvation had some good action so for me it was entertaining but the movie was far from good. Just the whole time traveling thing doesn't work out with logic.

i liked it, and was looking forward to 5, its a shame halcyon is going down, but im sure someone else will pick up the rights, for a "bomb" it sure made a crap ton of money, you cant judge everything by its first weekend.

Alex, I completely disagree with your take on T Salvation- it was an awesome popcorn flick with good acting and amazing graphics & sound. Sure, the plot lacked a little something, but to say it was 'so bad' is wrong in my opinion. I didn't do so well (for that kind of movie) financially in the U.S., but the worldwide gross did net the studio a $170 million profit. The franchise could really get rebooted with a more war-based T5.

I liked T4, too, and if they stopped making all movies that were as 'bad' as T4 there'd only be 10-15 movies released each year.

I loved Salvation on McG really redeemed Terminator after T3 so yeah I'm ready for another one, just…there needs to be a better writer on set, from what I heared the Salvation script had a lot of changes done to it, and I hope they do not follow that one story line about Connor traveling back in time, we've waited since 1984 to see the future and I'm not interested in seeing the past again.
There is only one way for it to go up, and those complaining about the lack of a story line well i'll say this the action was superb, there was good acting on both parts Worthington, even though his voice broke on a few lines, same with Bale and Yelchin was probably at his best here the kid has really come up in the past few years. So I'm hoping the stroy will be fleshed out more in the upcoming Terminator 5.

Oh and saying that Terminator 4 "was so bad" is stupid, and really Cameron could offer some insight on where the Terminator story should go even though he is busy with Avatar, Terminator was amazing, Terminator 2 was great, Terminator 3 was okay, Terminator 4 was good! Come on lets give McG one more chance, hell they give Uwe Boll more chances then he deserves, and look where that has gone, so go ahead and bring a new Terminator.

I enjoyed Salvation. If they are going to re-cast John Connor though and whatever Terminator of the week the scribe decides to pen in, I think I will pass. I don't agree Arnold needs to be in it CGI or other, however the movie needs some consistency and that is where I believe fans will be turned off, if they recast and not continue the story from the last.
Darkside on Aug 21, 2009

@ 11:
You put your finger on it, as much as I like T1-T4 and the Sara Conner Chronicles, the story has been stretched in so many directions it has lost something special. If there is a T5 it needs some consistency/continuity.

District 9 has proven you can make smart, popular science fiction for about $30 million.
Terminator Salvation proved that you can throw $200 million at a pile of crap and it will remain a pile of crap.
Grab a few screenwriters who truly love and understand the franchise, a director itching to make something truly different, and give them $30 million to reboot the Terminator franchise.
It will work, trust me.

i would like to see more Terminator movies if done right the problem was the screen writters John Brancato and Michael Ferris. them guys dont know nothing about Terminator they wrote Catwoman and Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines.
also Warner Bros been a pussy for not having a R-Rated movie. instead we get a PG-13 movie with scenes been cut that everyone notice when watching the movie.

t4 was a great roller coaster movie and amazing cgi and acting 2 that held you back on your seats!

you are so right District 9 only had a budget of $30 million and its better then Terminator Salvation, GI Joe, Transformers.
the truth is alot of lower budget movies with a good director and screen writters are better then these big budget movies. even Kung Fu Hustle is a low budget movie the budget for that movie was only $20 million and thats movie was great

Personally I loved Terminator Salvation and I hated T3 I don't even count T3 as canon. I was glad they finally decided to make a Terminator film that wasn't entirely dependent on Arnold's involvement. Arnold plays a great terminator but you cant and you shouldn't try to remake T2 over and over again which is why I think T3 failed in my opinion other than the fact that the whole movie felt like a bad joke.
I think the reason people have problems with Terminator Salvation is that it has more of a serious tone than they are used to when it comes to a Terminator film. But they should realize that the only times that T2 had its funny moments actually made sense because they were dependent on the fact that the T800 didnt understand certain things about human interaction.

ridiculous to say that t4 was that bad, how fucked up are we that we cant even appreciate an action movie anymore. this film school mentality needs to gtfo of the action genre because its snobbing it up with stupid bullshit. T4 was by no means a masterpiece, but it was a fun flick to watch and i was never bored watching it.

Stop pretending as if you're truly speaking for the fans of the Terminator franchise. I'm assuming you're stoked about the new Twilight movie?
You think because some corporate losers screwed the Terminator franchise that all of a sudden all the fans no longer want to see a Terminator move ever again?
Even though Terminator salvation wasn't great, it was the poor script and poor choice for director that really did it. A bad script is almost always going to equal a bad movie.
What a dumb article.

T4 sucked. The plot was aweful, effects was ok but crude imo, acting I don't really care but I really didn't like when Bale used his Batman voice (you know, the lame raspy voice he does when he wants to sound serious or something…).
I'm not saying I wouldn't enjoy a fifth Terminator but that's mainly because I want a kind of closure on it. Like, they actually defeat Sky Net and they actually send back the terminators through time.

I can't help but feel that the more Terminator movies they make, the more they are damaging the reputation of the first two classics. Just leave it alone, or if you must keep the name alive do it in tangential ways that don't effect Cameron's work (video games, TV, comics, etc.).

T4 was either really bad, or my expectations were extremely high. In the end I'd say it was a mix of the two leaning more toward it was bad.

Hold on there. First you say it was "So Bad" but by the end of the article you enjoyed it? It's one or the other..
To be honest, i thought the film was alright. I think the trailers were MUCH better than the actual film which is a bad thing in a way, but I could see where the franchise was going and would much rather see more of those films than more bloody twilight films.

"Terminator", and "T2" were awesome , because of James Cameron.
T3 and T4 lost its luster, because of weak story lines, bad acting, bad production and directing.

When I watched T4 I was expecting a disaster, but I came out entertained and felt that the criticisms it received were harsh. At the end of T2 I felt that there was some closure. At the end of T3 I thought "Enough Already" how much blood can you get out of a stone.
However at the end of T4 I was open to the thought of a T5. Now that it's been considered, I hope they run with it. The storyline is open to a continuation and if they do I'll be going to see it.

This is fantastic news. Terminator Salvation was not good at all. It felt like I was watching someone else play a video game. This franchise should have stopped with James Cameron. It goes to prove that no one sles can do this franchise justice like he did.
The only good that came out of Salvation was that it made Terminator 3 look golden.

As I read the comments on here, most like it, but some don't. A few are totally wiped out against T4. While the story had some holes, it is not something that can't be fixed in T5. T4 was meant to be the first part of a 3 part movie. When viewed as a movie by itself, well yeah it receives a low rating. Maybe 4 out of 10 at best. When viewed as movie 4 of the 4 movies about The Terminator story, and yeah even with the Sarah Connors Cs, it raises it's rating to maybe a 5 1\2. But when you view it as the first of a three part movie, it has potential to become an 8 or 8 1\2 to greater. Yeah a lot of folks were hyped up and expected something to just blow them away, but this film alone didn't do that. The makers can well remember now that Terminator fans are special and won't just take anything they want to dish out. Real Terminator fans want more, but they want it done right! Not just something slapped together to make a buck. We want them to make money, but we want our money's worth! Don't leave holes in the plot, nor in the story line. Did I not understand Judgement day correctly? Nation was against nation because they thought we were against them and blowing Nukes their way? So they blowed Nukes back and thus humanity was on the verge of being extent? But we begin with the world leaders or some of them gathered in a sub as the leaders of the resistance. The signal was a decoy, but did they try to use it to shut down the hunter that came up fast to blow them into history? John Connors got the signal to work, why not shut down the Terminator, even skynet? Holes in the plot? We don't want to fill in the holes, let the movie be complete without holes! Explain yourself even if it takes all three movies, and the Terminator fans will be loyal! Refuse and they will dump you just as quick. But with or without you, they will still be Terminator fans. (Personally I look forward hoping T5 and T6 are added.

I think that TERMINATOR SALVATION was a good and enjoyable action movie it is almost as good as the previous three movies and i think that it deserves to have a sequel and i am really looking forward to it and also they did their best to put Arnold Schwarzenegger in it.
So for me it deserves to have a sequel because i really love Terminator Salvation despite its small flaws it doesn't matter it is really a good blockbuster movie.
Looking forward for its sequel…

i loved Salvation. Personally i liked it more than the other "blockbuster" movies this summer. As for the money its made thus far, thats just the tip of the ice burg. Many movies have done well but not great in the theaters but then made a killing in DvD sales. i think it best to wait and see how much more cash flows in once the blu-rays and dvds hit before capping this horse in the head. Long live Terminator!

Anyone notice the similarities between Terminator Salvation and Tropic Thunder?
This is quite interesting:
1. A Black rapper.
2. A Director who can't control his cast. (Bale Rant)
3. An intense 'method actor' who has a history of controversy. (Bale)
4. An Australian actor in a supporting role.
5. A 'War' film.
6. One of the most expensive movies almost never made.
7. Defeated by a rival Ben Stiller movie.
8. Cockburn/McG
9. Les Grossman didn't need a key grip. He got Bill Murray to headbutt McG.
p.s. Terminator Salvation was terrible.

Terminator: Salvation: It has enough pace and excitement to keep action fans switched on, This is Sam Worthington's movie, and he steals it, decent action film, far superior to the awful Terminator 3. Despite some laughably silly plot elements, McG has created an overall entertaining movie experience. Being a rabid fan that grew up on the franchise created by James Cameron, the idea of McG getting behind the camera for this sequel was slightly nauseating, and yet, by some miracle, the fourth film in the franchise is (barely) passable.

Terminator salvation wasn't that bad. I actually enjoy it. It wasn't perfect but
it was much better than T3 and Arnold shwarzneger performance in it. Financially, it didn't achieve what the producers expected especially in the US. So, planning for a sequel might be a risky decision to make. However, as I said, the movie was entertaining and I hope that this franchise will continue hopefully using better writers and better directors.

While all i've heard about the so called Avatar is just "Meh" I mean from "real" people who are not into movie websites like this. I'm of course more than ready for a T5 and even a 6th one!

Freddy welcome to the bandwagon, man…everyone I've talked about the film loved everything about, as did I.

I usually don't complain about the way Alex writes his articles, but I have to object to the line
"It doesn't help that "no one" is really that interested in seeing more Terminator movies after Terminator Salvation was so bad"
I really don't see how that opinion can be formed. It's done almost 400 million Worldwide, there are clearly a lot of people even just posting on this site that were satisfied with Salvation, and it's IMDb rating is a solid 7, which is higher than Wolverine, Transformers, GI Joe and Angels and Demons. Despite the flaws in those movies nobody really questions whether there are a lot of people out there that want sequels to it. I personally loved Salvation even despite some flaws. However my interest in a sequel has nothing to do with how good the most recent one was, it's solely based on where the story can go from here. The best stuff from the War is still to come so I say bring on the sequels.

Terminator Salvation was garbage, Christian Bales Conner was not in any way believable as a leader, they decided to turn him into a Neo/ the One type character which was horrid. The floating explanation given to Marcus at the end made no logical sense, WHY THE HELL WOULD SKYNET MONOLOGUE??? The action was worse than the 5 minute scene in the opening of 2 (with the exception of the truck vs. motorcyles scene, the best part of the film) Every decision skynet made was nonsensical and idiotic.
Oh and it had one of the worst endings I have ever seen, with a groan inducing "the fight isn't over" voiceover at the end.
At least Terminator 3 had a ballsy ending.

Korm on Aug 24, 2009
68
Wrong. We DO want more Terminator, we just want two things:
– DON'T CHANGE AN BAD ASS ENDING [ie Connor's consciousness inserted into Marcus' terminator body then made to look like John Connor, therefore making the leader of the resistance into a machine].
– Make Christian Bale quit using that constipated voice.
I liked T3 and T4, but the inconsistancies piss me off [T3 said the future IS set]. TSCC, which I watched all off, was too much drama, and not enough badassery. Sarah Connor is not a concerned mommy, she's a bad ass war fighter. WAAAY too much crying in that show. Only good thing was Cameron.

I really liked T4. Especially after the terrible T3 they gave us. How was T4 a "bad" or "terrible" movie? Have these people not seen GI Joe? Ever watch Transformers or Fighting? Those movies were pure garbage.
Whoever thinks Terminator is dead isn't too smart. 400 million dollars without DVD sales isn't terrible. Why not wait until the DVD sales are added? How can the company that owns the rights to the Terminator series be broke? What did they do with the profits?
T4 was the first part of the future war. Everyone should have expected more of a serious movie. The whole world was nuked!!!! Machines are trying to kill the remaining humans!!! Do you think these people are going to have some Dave Chappelle sense of humor? They are scratching to stay alive for gods sake!
We need:
-More Bale being the leader of the human resistance(John Connor being John Connor)
-Lazer weapons(Can't wait)
-More connections to the older films(T4 did a good job, I think)
-Noooooo going back in time!!!!!!!!! WTF??? I have waited to see the post Judgement Day war for ever. I do not want to go back to another "Chase" film!!!!! WTF???

@Aaron
I agree with you on some points but who said anything about humor. No one wanted humor in this movie.
Definitely don't want another going back in time movie. We want the future war. What would it take to convince Cameron to come back and show us the future war the right way? His 2 minutes of the future war at the beginning of T2 were better than anything from the 3rd or 4th movie.

The First Terminator film will always be my favorite. T2 & T3 i thought were great sequels and of-course Terminator Salvation makes me want to see more how the future war turns out. Id say people over exaggerated about how bad the hated the film. Think about it people, this is only the beginning!, the early years of the war between SKYNET & Mankind. After the ending climax we saw the prototype T-800's get destroyed & its creation will be delayed. Plus we still have to see the laser weapons, more bigger machines seen in T1 & T2 flashbacks be developed etc. Think of it as the Star Wars prequel trilogy, its all about how it gets to the point where SKYNet will first attempt to kill Connor by sending the first terminator back in time.
