David Fincher's Social Network Movie Gets a Greenlight

What did I tell ya! The End of Show blog (via SlashFilm) is reporting as of yesterday that David Fincher's The Social Network has been given the greenlight from Columbia Pictures and will start shooting this year, as I speculated earlier this month. They're reporting that its been given a $47 million budget and will start production in October. Fincher's deal to direct has been signed and Scott Rudin, Kevin Spacey and Dana Brunetti are producing. They are currently working on casting at the moment and scouting shooting locations in Cambridge and Boston. I'm sure we'll be hearing a lot more about this production very soon.

Who knows if that budget number is accurate, but if it is, it's a step down from his last few films, which is probably the better way to go this time. Benjamin Button cost $150M, Zodiac cost $65M, Panic Room cost $48M, and Fight Club cost $63M. Of course, The Social Network doesn't really have the need for elaborate visual effects or an intricate style, but then again, Fincher might be planning to take a unique approach to this, which I'd love to see. I don't care what anyone else thinks, but I'm very excited to see Fincher take on the Facebook movie. It sounds like a great story and with Fincher's finesse I'm sure it'll be just fantastic.

Uh, future POS? Are you kidding? I know that the concept of a Facebook movie is hard to grasp, but Fincher is one of the best directors working today and this apparently has a great script. If anything, it's a future award winner, not POS.

Well, I'm disappointed. The concept for this movie bores me, even if it does have a great script and could turn into a good movie.

Fincher is best when he's taking on conceptually interesting plots. This movie will be boring.

This should be something original. I think there was an earlier flash which stated this would be an adaptation of Ben Mezrich's "The Accidental Billionaires." The actual book itself, is garbage. Boring garbage. "I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell" garbage.

I hope Fincher is smarter and starts the whole story over on this.

In defense of Alex and #2, quite honestly, the concept of a FB movie sounds completely and utterly AWFUL — however, Fincher is undeniable a brilliant director and I'm sure he wouldn't have gotten studio backing if his idea was as bad as it may at first seem…

Frankly, I'm just surprised a director of his sensibilities would ever come upon an idea like this. I wish I was intrigued by it, but I'm not and afraid I won't until a trailer or review piques my interest.

This will be battling the Monopoly and View-Master movies next year at the box office. What a year!
