Jerry Bruckheimer Picks Up Derek Haas' Short Story 'Shake'
August 30, 2009
by Alex Billington
Jerry Bruckheimer has just bought the rights to a short story written by screenwriter Derek Haas called Shake. Haas will now expand the story into a feature screenplay. The deal was made for more than seven figures (holy sh*t!), which is a huge pay day for Haas. This all came together because Haas launched a site called PopcornFiction.com, which Bruckheimer visited, loved the story Haas wrote about an FBI agent who, while chasing a killer, begins to lose control of his own body, then bought the idea for a potential Disney production. Now that's a success story. You can still read the short story on the website for the time being.
Derek Haas (left above), who often writes with fellow screenwriter Michael Brandt (right above), previously wrote 2 Fast 2 Furious, Catch That Kid, 3:10 to Yuma, Wanted, and its sequel, Wanted 2. He still writes with Brandt, but since this is his story, he's the only one credited so far. He's also attached to numerous high profile projects, including The A-Team, The Matarese Circle, Spy Hunter, and Beverly Hills Cop IV. I just read the short story over on PopcornFiction.com and it's pretty damn good; could make for a great movie, especially with Bruckheimer producing. I'll be looking forward to seeing who they attach as a director next.

Just read the story…gives me inspiration that I can still make it in Hollywood if stories like these are worth that amount of money. Rather dull short story…reminds me of a cross between Seven (with Kevin Spacey in the backseat targeting Brad Pitt's wife (Paltrow)) and Silence of the Lambs (with Jodie Foster knocking at the mental villain's door)
