Details on Reese & Wernick's Sci-Fi War Epic Earth vs. Moon
Yesterday we ran an early interview with the writers of Zombieland, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. At the end, I asked them about what they've got coming up next, and while they couldn't talk about the Venom script the wrote, they were able to talk about "a big, epic, sci-fi war movie" called Earth vs. Moon. It was sold as a pitch to Universal with Scott Stuber (The Kingdom, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, The Wolf Man) producing, but it's much different, tonally, from Zombieland. Wernick describes it as a "hardcore, 300-style movie with some comic relief to it, but about the Earth and a colony on the moon essentially in a civil war."

James McAvoy Set to Co-Star with Seth Rogen in I'm With Cancer
For quite awhile now, Superbad writers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg have been attached to produce fellow screenwriter Will Reiser's autobiographical screenplay I'm With Cancer, a comical chronicle of a 25-year-old's cancer diagnosis, and his subsequent struggle to beat the disease (similar to Funny People). Variety is reporting today that James McAvoy (Wanted, Atonement) has signed on to co-star with Rogen. Indie filmmaker Nicole Holofcener (Lovely & Amazing, Friends with Money) has also been set to direct. You might remember hearing about this back in December when it came in at #9 on the 2008 Black List.

New Photos: James Purefoy in Michael Bassett's Solomon Kane
One of the few panels I regret missing during Comic-Con was for Michael Bassett's Solomon Kane, a movie based on the Robert E. Howard character of the same name. I heard some great things about the footage and have been anxious to see more from it. Bloody-Disgusting has debuted a few new photos from Solomon Kane today that feature James Purefoy as the 16th century Puritan warrior. In addition to Purefoy, this also stars Jason Flemyng, Rachel Hurd-Wood, Pete Postlethwaite, and Max von Sydow. These may not be as great as footage, but they definitely look pretty awesome for still shots. Check 'em out below!

Martin Hynes Adapting Kate DiCamillo's Magician's Elephant
Fox is adapting Kate DiCamillo's new children's book "The Magician's Elephant" and has hired Martin Hynes to write and direct. Hynes's first feature film was The Go-Getter, an indie road trip flick that debuted at Sundance a few years ago. Although I absolutely loved the film (read my old review), it sadly never got picked up, and barely made it out on DVD late last year. The story in "The Magician's Elephant" centers on "impossible things that may happen" when a fortune teller tells an orphan boy that an elephant will lead him to his long-lost sister. Kate DiCamillo's other novel "The Tale of Despereaux" was just adapted last year.

Robert Redford Back to Directing Again with The Conspirator
Even at 72 years old (7 years younger than Clint Eastwood), Robert Redford is still going very strong. THR's Risky Biz Blog announces that Redford will direct the historical drama The Conspirator, the story of Mary Surratt, alleged conspirator of Abraham Lincoln assassin John Wilkes Booth. This will be Redford's eighth film he's directed. The indie production is being produced by Greg Shapiro, Rob and Web Stone and Brian Peter Falk. James Solomon, an exec producer and writer on "The Bronx Is Burning", wrote the script. Producers are out to cast, with James McAvoy said to be at the top of their list for one of the lead roles.

Werner Herzog's My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done Trailer
There are two, completed Werner Herzog films showing at the Toronto Film Festival this year, the first being that Nic Cage flick Bad Lieutenant and the second being My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done starring Oscar nominees Michael Shannon and Willem Dafoe. Thanks to The Playlist we have an early look at the trailer. My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done is loosely based on the true story of a San Diego man who experiences a series of mystifying events, including acting out a Sophocles play in his mind, that lead him to brutally murder his own mother with a sword. Herzog has described it as more of a horror film.

First Look: The Chronicles of Narnia Ship the Dawn Treader
Hopefully you didn't forget, but The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is actually in-production at 20th Century Fox. Disney dumped the Chronicles of Narnia franchise last year after Prince Caspian performed poorly, mainly due to marketing problems since that movie and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe were disconnected in setting and tone, among other things. Fox stepped up and now they're shelling out millions to get it made. From the looks of it, though, they might have a "replacement" movie for Pirates of the Caribbean, as Disney is behind on getting the fourth movie ready.

Lionsgate Distributing Matthew Vaughn's Kick-Ass in 2010
Matthew Vaughn's highly anticipated adaptation of Mark Millar's comic book series Kick-Ass finally has a distributor. Lionsgate has acquired US and Canadian distribution rights for Kick-Ass and will releasing it wide sometime in 2010. Vaughn funded and produced the adaptation entirely on his own, outside of the studio system, and unveiled the first bit of footage to fans at Comic-Con back in July. The buzz was so strong coming out of the Con, that Lionsgate got into a bidding war with Paramount and Universal, but the rights ended up going to Lionsgate in the end. Can't wait to see this hit theaters in all of its bloody, brilliant glory!

Bobcat Goldthwait Making a Musical Based on a Kinks Album
I hope everyone knows who Bobcat Goldthwait, the Police Academy turned filmmaker who is responsible for one this year's finest dark comedies, World's Greatest Dad. That film is the third feature that Bobcat has directed, and considering the great response its received since premiering at Sundance earlier this year, I think we can expect Bobcat to continue directing more films, even if this doesn't prove to be a big hit at the box office. In looking forward to what's next, Bobcat recently told CHUD that he's working on a "spree killer script" first and then planning to do a musical based on the Kinks album called Schoolboys in Disgrace.

What do Joe Pesci, Mark Hamill, The Rock, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Kevin Bacon, and Steven Seagal all have to do with Zombieland? Find out in our exclusive interview with the screenwriters of the upcoming zombie comedy - Rhett Reese (R) and Paul Wernick (L). You may not recognize them (this is their first feature), but they're going to hit it big with this movie, I'm sure of that. Although I haven't seen Zombieland yet, I was still able to talk with Rhett and Paul about zombies, screenwriting, 3D movies, and great action scenes. Here's another excerpt to whet your appetite: "It's sort of the Midnight Run of zombie movies."

Sony Rehires James Vanderbilt to Write Spider-Man 5 and 6
Web-heads young and old, rejoice. We'll be seeing a lot of our friendly, neighborhood Spider-Man on the big screen in the years to come. Now, as for the details of who, what, and when - the web thickens. Just as Sony is ready to launch Spider-Man 4 (set for a 2011 release) with Sam Raimi, Tobey Maguire, and Kirsten Dunst all on-board once again, they've hired a writer to start work on Spider-Man 5 and 6, according to Variety. James Vanderbilt, of The Losers and David Fincher's Zodiac, will write an over-arching storyline that will extend from the fifth movie into the sixth - which might mean both films could even be shot back-to-back.

Quentin Tarantino's Favorite 20 Movies From 1992 to Now
This video is starting to make its way around the web and it's definitely worth watching. Like him or hate him, Quentin Tarantino is a very unique filmmaker, with a distinct style and particular tastes. We know that Enzo Castellari's 1978 Italian film The Inglorious Bastards was an inspiration for Tarantino's new Inglorious Basterds, but what are his other favorite films? In this video recorded for Sky Movies, Tarantino lists off his favorite 20 movies from 1992 to now. That year is so important because that's the year he became a director (with Reservoir Dogs) and these are the 20 films that he admires the most since then.
