Will Ferrell and Brad Pitt Join the Voice Cast of Oobermind

Oobermind

Back in June, we gave you a glimpse of the first photo from DreamWorks Animation's upcoming superhero satire Oobermind. At the time, Robert Downey, Jr. was slated to voice the role of the titular supervillain, but Variety now says otherwise. Will Ferrell has been set to replace Downey, and will be joined by Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill. The three male co-stars beef up a cast that previously only included Tina Fey, but now looks to be a force to be reckoned with. Oobermind sets out to answer a seemingly overlooked question in the comic book world: What would a supervillain do if he actually defeated his superhero arch nemesis?

Mike Nichols Directing an Adaptation of Highsmith's Deep Water

Deep Water - Mike Nichols

No, this isn't a remake of the yacht race documentary Deep Water, nor is it a horror film set on open water either. Deep Water is a novel written by Patricia Highsmith in 1957 that is being adapted by Fox 2000. Mike Nichols (of The Graduate, Catch-22, Primary Colors, Closer, Charlie Wilson's War) has been set to direct with Joe Penhall (Enduring Love, The Road) writing the screenplay. In Deep Water, a couple in a loveless marriage hang on through an arrangement whereby the husband permits the wife to take lovers. Suspense builds as those lovers begin dying. Looks like Nichols has some great new projects lined up next.

Cameron Talks About Inspirations and the Themes in Avatar

James Cameron's Avatar

In preparation for Avatar Day this Friday, I've been reading through the interview that Geoff Boucher of Hero Complex did with James Cameron last week. At least 6500 people have seen footage from Avatar, but the rest of the world is still waiting for their first glimpse, which arrives on Thursday with a trailer and on Friday with 16 minutes of footage. Now that we know what it looks like, it's time to delve deeper into the story. "I think I veer toward classicism, being solidly rooted in the classic stuff. I mean really old-school science fiction. This is a movie I would have loved to have seen when I was a 14-year-old kid in 1968."

Worth Watching - Aug 15: Oliver Parker's Dorian Gray Teaser

Dorian Gray Teaser

I've received numerous emails about this film, so I wanted to feature it this weekend. Dorian Gray is an adaptation of Oscar Wilde's 1890 novel The Picture of Dorian Gray that stars Ben Barnes as the titular character. At first I thought, for some odd reason, this was some throwaway fantasy film that was grasping for attention when it should be going straight-to-DVD, but I was wrong about that. STYD debuted a trailer for it during Comic-Con (which I've included below) and our friends at Empire recently debuted a rather eye-catching poster (which you see a piece of above). It actually looks pretty damn good, so check it out!

Alison Pill Replacing Ellen Page in Werewolf Film 'Jack and Diane'

Alison Pill

I know what you're thinking - a werewolf film?! Yes indeed, but it's even more than that. Jack and Diane has been "in the works" for a long, long time. Back in 2007, SlashFilm and I both wrote big articles about it because it needed extra financing to get off the ground and into production. At that time, it was set to star former Juno actresses Ellen Page and Olivia Thirlby. Unfortunately it never went into production, and we've been waiting for an update on it ever since. However, Brendon Connelly of SlashFilm recently discovered that the official website now lists Milk and Scott Pilgrim star Alison Pill in the cast in place of Ellen Page.

Sound Off: Neill Blomkamp's District 9 - Your Thoughts?

District 9

Now that you've seen it, what did you think? After a year in the making (read my retrospective), it's finally arrived in theaters today - Neill Blomkamp's District 9. Does it live up to all of the hype? Does it live up to your expectations from the trailers? Is it one of the best sci-fi films of the year? How does the story hold up? Was the action exciting? Or was it one of the worst sci-fi films of the year? Was the CGI painful to watch? Was it an overdone, over-hyped waste of time? And most importantly, what did you think about the way it ended? Sound off below, leave your thoughts, and let us know what you thought of District 9!

First Trailer for Kristen Bell's New RomCom When in Rome

When in Rome Trailer

Touchstone has just debuted the trailer for When in Rome, the new romantic comedy starring Kristen Bell. This also stars Josh Duhamel as her big love interest, and a bunch of other wanna-be lovers, like Danny DeVito, Will Arnett, Jon Heder, and Dax Shepard. Sure it looks funny and glossy, like every other romcom made these days, I just don't really care. It's always the same story told a different way, except for something like The Time Traveler's Wife, where they throw in a sci-fi element. I'm already predicting that the fountain was a big sham and she's really, truly in love with Duhamel's character anyway. So, enjoy?

Universal Wants Robert Downey Jr. as Their New Lestat?

Robert Downey Jr.

Yep, we're talking about the vampire Lestat de Lioncourt, the French noblemen who was made into a vampire in the 18th century. Bloody-Disgusting is reporting that Universal is developing another adaptation of Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles, to continue on that franchise that first hit the big screen back in 1994 with Interview with the Vampire. They don't have any details on what's going on with the reboot or which Anne Rice novel(s) they're going to be drawing from, but they do say that Robert Downey Jr. is in "close talks" to play the vampire Lestat. Thanks to Twilight, we're really in the thick of vampire mania now.

Ron Perlman Delivers an Optimistic Bubba Nosferatu Update

Ron Perlman / Bubba Ho-Tep

I'm not even sure why, but Bubba Nosferatu is one of those projects where I'm happy to keep everyone update on, no matter how big or small the details. It probably won't even get that much attention until its about to hit theaters, but I'm still inherently looking forward to it, maybe because Ron Perlman is set to star. Perlman gave an update to Fangoria (via SlashFilm) recently and it's looking pretty good, as long as everything still comes together. The last we heard, back in April, Perlman had said that shooting is "looking good for maybe late fall," but of course in Hollywood, plans like that can always fall apart at any minute.

First Look: Sam Worthington in the First Real Avatar Photo!

First Real Avatar Photo

It's finally here! Although the trailer will be online in about a week (next Friday), Fox has released the first official production photo from James Cameron's Avatar featuring Sam Worthington and his Avatar (in the background). Thanks to our friends at SlashFilm for first discovering this, as it's a very big reveal. Those of us who were at Comic-Con and saw the footage (including the scene that this is from) know all about the Avatars, but for everyone else in the world, this is their first look at James Cameron's world and at least one of the creatures that you'll find on Pandora. Without further ado, check out the first Avatar photo below!

Check This Out: Brand New Theatrical Poster for Zombieland

Zombieland Poster

The best part of this rather lackluster poster for Zombieland (via ComingSoon) is the tagline - "Nut Up or Shut Up." But other than that, this is bland. The whole thing just feels off-centered. I know that it's tilted (which seems to be an increasing trend with posters these days), but it looks shifted to the right too much. And the damn coloring just annoys me. Why is everything almost black and white, except for the chainsaw, Tallahassee's left holster, and the insides of Little Rock's jacket? It really makes no sense. Please tell me this was just a screwed up version and it's actually fully colored? Because this movie deserves a better poster!

For Humans Only: A Look Back at District 9's Success Story

For Humans Only - Comic-Con 2008

It all began at Comic-Con last year. Banners and signs were placed throughout the San Diego Convention Center proclaiming in big block letters: "For Humans Only, Non-Humans Banned!" Either no one noticed them or, more likely, no one cared much about them. It wasn't until I got home from the Con and started thinking back - what the heck were they for? They all included a link to D-9.com and that was it. But even that site was mysterious. So I settled in, did some extensive research, and published the world's first article on District 9. It was an early look at the viral, and what it might be about, and from there we were off!
