Paul W.S. Anderson Developing a New Death Race Prequel

Frankenstein in Death Race

One of my favorite parts of Death Race from last year (yep, I actually enjoyed it) was that it jumped right into the action. The opening race scene was awesome and there was already a history that we didn't really need to know anything more about. Well, STYD is now reporting that even though it made Universal a wimpy $36.3 million at the box office, Paul W.S. Anderson, Jeremy Bolt, and Impact Pictures are planning a prequel that will focus on the mysterious driver known as Frankenstein (seen above). Tony Giglio (Chaos, Timber Falls) has been hired to write the screenplay based on a story by Anderson and may also direct.

Robert Rodriguez' Nerverackers Pulled from Dimension's Line-Up

Robert Rodriguez

Remember that sci-fi action movie Robert Rodriguez had coming up next called Nerverackers? Well unfortunately it sounds like its been put on the backburner. Bloody-Disgusting is reporting that Dimension Films has taken the project off of their release slate, which actually isn't a big surprise. It was originally scheduled to hit theaters on April 16th of 2010, only 8 months from now. But considering we haven't heard any casting news or other updates since everything first hit in February, and instead we've only heard details on Machete, Predators, and even The Jetsons, it looks like Nerverackers won't be happening anytime soon.

Bill Hader Reveals That the MacGruber Movie Will be Hard-R?!

MacGruber

This can't be true, can it? I'm not a fan of the current era of SNL, so I don't really care about Will Forte's MacGruber or the movie being made about the character, but this news was just too good to pass up. SNL comedian Bill Hader talked with NY Mag recently on the streets of New York and revealed that, remarkably, the script for the MacGruber movie contains plenty of R-rated material. We don't know if Hader is joking or telling the truth, but it sounds like it'll be good either way. Considering this is already gearing up to start shooting soon, I don't think there's time to change it anyway. Here, we'll just let Hader explain himself.

David Mamet to Adapt The Diary of Anne Frank Once Again

David Mamet

Acclaimed filmmaker David Mamet (House of Games, Homicide, Heist, Redbelt) is set to write and direct a new rendition of The Diary of Anne Frank. According to Variety, Disney (of all studios) has recently acquired the rights to the 15-year-old Holocaust victim's diary first published in English in 1952. The film is going to be an amalgamation of Frank's own writings, Albert Hackett and Frances Goodrich's stage play, and (of course) Mamet's own original take on the material. Supposedly, this take may explore the young girl's right of passage. Now, I'm no fan of David Mamet. At least not when he's sitting in the director's chair...

Warner Bros Goes Plastic - They're Developing a Lego Movie

Lego - 300 Poster

There's Legoland, there's Lego Rock Band, there's Lego Star Wars. Now, there's Lego: The Movie. Warner Brothers is developing a movie "around Lego and its building blocks" reports Variety today. Newcomer writers Dan and Kevin Hageman have been hired to pen the script for the project that will mix live action and animation, but plot details are being kept under wraps (come on, really?). Dan Lin, who is developing a Tom and Jerry movie and developed Sherlock Holmes and Terminator Salvation, is producing this project for the studio, along with Vertigo. We have entered the era endless movies-based-on-toys, unquestionably.

Promo Trailer for Richard Linklater's Me and Orson Welles

Me and Orson Welles Promo Trailer

Me and Orson Welles is a film you probably haven't heard of yet, which is a bit sad considering it's a great film with great performances. Richard Linklater directors a period piece starring Zac Efron, Claire Danes, and Christian McKay about the Mercury Theatre production of "Julius Ceasar" directed by Orson Welles in 1937. The story is about Efron, the only teenager cast in the play. Efron actually does a great job in this, but the best performance is from McKay, who plays a spectacularly entertaining Orson Welles. I saw this in Toronto last year (read my review) and enjoyed it, but unfortunately it hasn't been picked up yet.

Minor Scream 4 Updates from Williamson, Cox, and Arquette

Scream Mask

A handful of small updates on Scream 4 have been trickling out over the last few weeks. They individually weren't worth writing about, but together, they make for a great Scream 4 update. First off, screenwriter and franchise co-creator Kevin Williamson talked with iFMagazine on the TCA press tour and divulged more story details. Williamson not only confirmed that it was a trilogy (which was reported previously), but spoke a bit more about the sequel. “It's a new trilogy. It's ten years later. Gale Weathers, ten years later." And don't forget, it was already confirmed that Courteney Cox and David Arquette will both be back.

Check This Out: Gritty New Concept Art from I, Frankenstein

I, Frankenstein Concept Art

Back in April we announced a new project called I, Frankenstein that is being developed by Underworld: Rise of the Lycans director Patrick Tatopoulos and Underworld co-creator Kevin Grevioux. The film is an adaptation of a Dark Horse comic of the same name that brings together various classic monsters, including Frankenstein's Monster, the Invisible Man, Dracula and the Hunchback of Notre Dame, in a contemporary film noir setting. A handful of various websites have unveiled four different concept art images today from the in-development project for your viewing pleasure. Each one features a different monster character.

Must Watch: Full Theatrical Trailer for Imagi's Astro Boy

Astro Boy Trailer

Summit just debuted a full-length theatrical trailer for Astro Boy, their latest CGI feature due out in October, over on MSN today. We've already seen two teaser trailers previously, so you should already know what to expect. However, this time they've included more of the comedy (to help bringing in younger audiences) and more of the finished voices. And I've got to say, the voices aren't really working for me. Nic Cage seems out of place, so does Donald Sutherland. The only one that I like and that I think fits perfectly is Freddie Highmore as Astro Boy himself. Also, apologies for the low quality, as that's all MSN had. Enjoy!

First Look: Colin Farrell in Neil Jordan's New Film Ondine

Colin Farrell in Ondine

I know that not everyone is the biggest fan of Colin Farrell, but I think he redeemed himself a bit with In Bruges last year. Farrell next stars in a few upcoming films, including in Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus as well as Danis Tanovic's Triage. He also stars in Neil Jordan's Ondine, described as a "lyrical modern fairy tale" about an Irish fisherman who finds what he believes to be a mermaid in his net one day. A few brand new photos from the film appeared in my email today and they're worth checking out, even if you don't like Colin Farrell much, as they feature a beautiful Polish actress named Alicja Bachleda.

Paramount Dumping Todd Louiso's Marc Pease Experience

The Marc Pease Experience

Never heard of The Marc Pease Experience? Exactly. The Playlist caught up with director Todd Louiso recently and got an altogether discouraging update about the expected release of his latest film. The Marc Pease Experience is an indie comedy that stars Jason Schwartzman, Ben Stiller, and Anna Kendrick. It was produced by Paramount Vantage and was ready to be released in 2008. Unfortunately that studio was shut down and merged into Paramount proper last year, leaving the film gasping for air. And now after a year of waiting, it's being dumped into 10 cities in late August, not including New York or Los Angeles.

Wolfgang Petersen Directing a Live-Action Paprika Remake?

Paprika

Where has he been hiding? Wolfgang Petersen, the other German action movie director (not Roland Emmerich), hasn't directed anything since Poseidon back in 2006. He's attached to an alien movie called Uprising at Sony, but there hasn't been any movement on that for a while (as far as I know). Moviehole is reporting (without many details at all) that Petersen is attached to direct a live-action version of Yasutaka Tsutsui's Japanese novel Paprika. Anime enthusiasts may remember that an anime version of the book was produced in 2006. But a big anime remake just doesn't seem like something Wolfgang would do?
