Ryan Fleck & Anna Boden Directing It's Kind of a Funny Story

Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden - It's Kind of a Funny Story

Husband and wife directors Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden, who previously brought us indie hits Half Nelson and Sugar, are working another project that they will write called It's Kind of a Funny Story next. The coming-of-age dramedy was picked up by Focus Features, who will finance, produce and distribute the film. The story centers on a 15-year-old boy named Craig who, battling depression, checks into a psychiatric hospital but finds himself placed in the adult ward. He has a series of colorful and dramatic relationships with a group of adults - many of whom he finds are far crazier than he is - and a girl his own age. Read on!

New Comedies: One Night Stan & The Best Thing About Pam Rooney

Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg

Following the immense success of The Hangover this year, studios are scrambling to pick up as many raunchy, R-rated comedies as they can. Two new comedies have been announced today by the trades. The first is One Night Stan that Josh Friedlander wrote. The film was sold to Lionsgate with Harold & Kumar creators Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg (seen above) set to direct. The second is The Best Thing About Pam Rooney, a high-concept romantic comedy to be written by Andrew Jay Cohen and Brendan O'Brien that Jonah Hill will produce and star in. That was sold to Universal but doesn't have a director yet.

WB Sends Over a Where the Wild Things Are Care Package!

Where the Wild Things Are Care Package

Found a surprise package on my doorstep today out of nowhere. Warner Brothers sent over a little care package for their upcoming Where the Wild Things Are movie directed by Spike Jonze. Inside was a copy of Maurice Sendak's book, which I don't own and haven't read in ages (now I know what I'm reading tonight), a copy of the trailer and featurette, and a limited edition poster. If you haven't seen anything from this yet, then I don't know where you've been living, because everyone else that I know is anxiously awaiting the debut of this wonderful movie in October. I shot a little video as well so everyone can see what's in it!

Save the Date: August 21st - Inception Trailer is Coming!

Inception Group in Japan

Wow, August 21st is going to be one hell of a day! Not only does Quentin Tarantino's long-awaited WWII epic Inglourious Basterds finally hit theaters. Not only will James Cameron finally unveil the trailer and 15 minutes of footage from Avatar in theaters worldwide. But the first trailer for Christopher Nolan's new movie Inception will debut as well. JoBlo was the first to discover that an Inception trailer would be showing in front of Basterds, however I've confirmed separately that this is accurate and it will be out then. Normally I wouldn't even write about this kind of news, but man, August 21st is going to be a great day!

Alexander Payne Ditches Downsizing, Picks Up The Descendants

Alexander Payne - The Descendants

Back in March we brought you early casting news on Sideways director Alexander Payne's latest project called Downsizing, a movie about little people starring, well, big people (Sacha Baron Cohen, Paul Giamatti, Meryl Streep, Reese Witherspoon). This was supposedly going to be his next project, however Production Weekly (via The Playlist) is now reporting that Payne starts shooting in January on an adaptation of Kaui Hart Hemmings' darkly humorous novel The Descendants instead. So does that mean Downsizing has been shelved for the time being? It sounds like it, especially considering Fox had budget problems as well.

Hugh Jackman Confirms Wolverine is Heading to Japan Next

Wolverine in Japan

Question of the Day: Are you more excited to see a G.I. Joe sequel or a Wolverine sequel? Let me remind you that the next Wolverine movie will see Logan venturing to Japan for some samurai training and Eastern philosophy. MTV caught up with Hugh Jackman recently at the Teen Choice Awards and talked briefly about the sequel, confirming pretty much what we already know. "Japan is where we're heading, [and] we're starting to work on it now. We're in the... first steps of developing that story." It was confirmed back in May after X-Men Origins: Wolverine opened that they'd be heading to Japan, so that's not big news.

G.I. Joe Sequel is Already Going into Development Soon

G.I. Joe

Yo Joe! I would say this was inevitable, but then again, the buzz for G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra was so bad that no one knew if it'd do well on its opening weekend. But this proves that franchise familiarity is king in Hollywood, even with bad buzz. In the LA Times report on the weekend box office (G.I. Joe ended up with $54.7 million) they say that "the studio's vice chairman, Rob Moore, confirmed that a sequel will soon go into development." This is great news for those who liked it, but bad news for everyone else. "The film's lead actors are contractually obligated to return for another film, though director Stephen Sommers is not."

Interview: Writer, Director, and Animator Hayao Miyazaki

Hayao Miyazaki

A couple of weeks ago I had the tremendous honor of interviewing the legendary Hayao Miyazaki in Los Angeles for the US release of his newest film Ponyo (watch the trailer). This was his first trip to America in more than five years and it was a truly rare and incredible experience to meet one of the greatest filmmakers in history. I've been a big Miyazaki fan for a very long time and I've always loved his films, with Castle in the Sky being my personal favorite. Ponyo (which arrives in theaters on Friday) is another wonderful addition to his already extraordinary filmography and just I can't suggest it enough, especially for kids. Read on!

Mystery Team Theatrical Release Plans & the Comic-Con Short

Mystery Team

Good news for fans of Derrick Comedy - they've finally announced release plans for Mystery Team! We featured the trailer for this back in July, but if you really weren't into that, we've also got an awesome new short that the guys made specifically to show at Comic-Con. I laughed my ass off watching this short and thankfully they've put it on YouTube for your viewing pleasure (it's so damn good - please watch it). But let's get back to the release plans, damnit! Mystery Team will start hitting theaters in August and September. It all kicks off at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, Texas on August 27th with a special live premiere event.

Jim Carrey Out, But Paul Giamatti In for The Three Stooges?

Paul Giamatti

More updates on the Farrelly Brother's wacky Three Stooges movie. SlashFilm recently discovered an article on Boston.com that has a few interesting casting changes. They're reporting that Jim Carrey, who was originally on-board to play Curly, has since dropped out, but they don't have a replacement just yet. Additionally, they say that Paul Giamatti has signed on to replace Sean Penn as Larry, since he is taking time off from acting. Giamatti seems like one of those "a little too easy" casting choices, as he's pretty much a perfect modern version of Larry, but does that make this any better? Nope, I still hate this entire concept!

Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal Reteaming for Triple Frontier

Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal

Paramount is reteaming director Kathryn Bigelow and writer Mark Boal on a new action/adventure project titled Triple Frontier. Bigelow and Boal last collaborated on The Hurt Locker (read my interview with them), one of this summer's best films about a bomb tech in Iraq. Triple Frontier is described as a high-stakes ensemble project that is set in the notorious border zone between Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil - making "la triple frontera" difficult to monitor and a haven for organized crime. The Dark Knight producer Charles Roven is developing through Atlas Entertainment with Alex Gartner and Steve Alexander.

Frank Langella Also Joins Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps

Frank Langella

The cast of Oliver Stone's Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps continues to grow. Variety reports today that Oscar nominated actor Frank Langella has joined the cast. Interestingly, they also mention that Josh Brolin is still involved, so Langella's role is one we haven't heard of before. Langella will play Lewis Zabel, an old-time broker who mentors Shia LaBeouf's character, a young Wall Street broker. The mentor's fate plays a major part in the film's plot. Michael Douglas is also back. They also don't mention Carey Mulligan at all, which makes me wonder if she's still cast in this? Either way, it's starting to look like a great cast.
