M. Night Shyamalan Moves the Dowdle's Devil Up To Canada

M. Night Shyamalan

An interesting story uncovered today by our friends at SlashFilm as found in the Philadelphia Inquirer. M. Night Shyamalan has been a hometown filmmaker ever since he started with The Sixth Sense and Wide Awake back in the late 90s. He's shot eight out of nine of his films in the Philadelphia region and is even staying there for post-production on The Last Airbender. Which is why the local newspaper made a big deal out of Shyamalan taking his film Devil up to Canada. But what is Devil? First off, it's not a new Shyamalan film, as he's only producing (and writing the story), but it sounds like a very interesting project anyway.

Check This Out: Official Poster for Ellen Page's Whip It

Whip It Poster

Be your own hero. Fox Searchlight has debuted the poster for Whip It today on MTV, which is the roller derby movie starring Ellen Page, Drew Barrymore, Kristen Wiig, Zoe Bell, and Juliette Lewis. We already debuted the trailer for this a few weeks ago, so its nothing too new, but I've got to admit I love the design of this poster a lot. The colors are great to see since we rarely ever get lime green and maroon/purple on a poster, but that's why it's so awesome. Plus the little photos inside of the logo lettering (see above) is also pretty cool. I'm a connoisseur of well designed posters and this is definitely one of them. See it out below!

Apparition Bringing Black Dynamite to Theaters this Fall

Black Dynamite

Remember that crazy trailer from last year for that awesome blaxploitation movie called Black Dynamite starring Michael Jai White? Good news - it's finally coming to theaters in October. Sony has announced that Apparition, the new distribution company also handling Terrence Malick's Tree of Life, will be bringing it to theaters starting on October 16th. The film stars Michael Jai White as Black Dynamite, a gun-toting, nunchuck-wielding, ladies man willing to fight all the way from the blood-soaked city streets to the hallowed halls of the Honky House. Read my Sundance review for a recap. This is one you won't want to miss seeing!

Featurette on Scoring F. Gary Gray's Law Abiding Citizen

Law Abiding Citizen Featurette

Thanks to an awesome trailer, I think it's safe to say that Law Abiding Citizen looks like it could be the surprise hit of the fall movie season. Veteran director F. Gary Gray looks to have delivered a riveting action thriller with a great cast and even better story. Much like Jon Favreau, Gray has a growing presence on Twitter, and that's where I found this great little featurette. F. Gary Gray himself shot a little video with composer Brian Tyler to answer a fan's question about how the scoring process works. He's also shot a few other videos about casting and will follow up this one with a look at the actual scoring session soon as well.

Sam Worthington Talks Avatar Day and Cameron's Tactics

Sam Worthington in Avatar

If there is one person we haven't heard much from yet regarding Avatar, it's the star of the show himself, Sam Worthington. Since breaking onto the scene quite recently with Macbeth and Rogue, Worthington has been working non-stop with filmmakers like James Cameron, McG, and now Louis Leterrier. Not only is he a hard worker and a fantastic actor, he's smart as hell, too, and a very down to earth guy familiar with what's going on in the world around him. Collider talked with Worthington recently and asked him about his thoughts on the outcome of Avatar Day. You might be surprised to hear what he had to say in response.

Worth Watching: Michelle Monaghan in the Trucker Trailer

Trucker Trailer

I got an email tonight with that photo above and a press release for a film called Trucker. I remembered hearing about it and even found a trailer, since it premiered at Tribeca last year. Trucker stars Michelle Monaghan in an apparently Oscar worthy role as a trucker, alongside of Benjamin Bratt, Nathan Fillion, and Jimmy Bennett, who played the young James T. Kirk in Star Trek. It actually looks pretty good, but I'm ost intrigued by Kris Tapley's post at In Contention addressing the possibility that Monaghan is a strong Oscar contender because there are no other great Lead Actresses in the running. I'll be rooting for her!

Casting Bits: Elizabeth Banks in 3 Days, Justin Theroux in Highness

Elizabeth Banks / Justin Theroux

Two casting tidbits to report on from THR. The lovely Elizabeth Banks has joined the cast of Paul Haggis' next film The Next Three Days, an English language remake of the 2008 French film Pour Elle. Banks takes on the lead role opposite Russell Crowe. Banks will play a woman who is imprisoned for a murder she claims she didn't commit, as her husband comes up with a desperate plan to free her from prison. Haggis, who last directed In the Valley of Elah, wrote the script and will direct, with filming scheduled to begin next month in Pittsburgh. Wouldn't have expect to see her in this role, but I think that makes it all the better. Read on!

Sony Pushing Ahead on Hancock 2, Hires Two Writers

Hancock

Sony has hired "The Shield" writers Adam Fierro and Glen Mazzara to write Hancock 2 for the studio. The original producing team is expected to return, although it hasn't been confirmed whether director Peter Berg will be back to helm this one. We are sure, though, that they wouldn't be moving forward if they weren't able to get Will Smith back as Hancock, so he's probably back. Plot details are being kept under wraps, though the writers will work with Smith and director Peter Berg to build on the world hinted at in the first movie, which involved a line of "immortal beings" who have been around for more than 3000 years.

Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan Starts Shooting in November

Darren Aronofsky - Ballet - Mila Kunis

It looks like Black Swan is Darren Aronofsky's official follow-up to The Wrestler; RoboCop will have to wait another few years. A few updates on Black Swan have been floating around the web recently, including an early script review that I decided not to get into so I don't ruin the experience for myself (or anyone else). However, Collider recently interviewed actress Mila Kunis, who co-stars in the upcoming film with Natalie Portman, and got some good spoiler-free details out of her. She does confirm that shooting stars in November and that she's been doing extensive ballet training for months - and it's physically exhausting.

Listen to Karen O's Song from Where the Wild Things Are

Where the Wild Things Are Song

Mainly due to a lack of other news today and because I just can't wait to see Where the Wild Things Are, I'm featuring the first song from Where the Wild Things Are soundtrack performed by Karen O. The song debuted on MySpace and can be listened to in its entirety for free by clicking here. It's called Karen O and the Kids - "All is Love" and was made specifically for the movie itself. The full soundtrack will be out on September 29th featuring more songs from Dean Fertita, Liars' guitarist Aaron Hemphill, the Bird and the Bee's Greg Kurstin, Services' Tristan Bechet, and Gris Gris's Oscar Michel (The Playlist has more details).
