Steven Soderbergh Updates Cleo, Liberace, and Moneyball

The story of Steven Soderbergh this year is one of the most fascinating stories out of pretty much any filmmaker. We already know about the Moneyball fiasco, but besides that, he's put out two films this year, the second of which - The Informant! - hits next month, and he's trying to get back on track with another project (Cleo? Liberace?) in the near future. I'm hoping to catch up with him for an interview in Toronto, not only because he's still one of my favorite directors (I loved The Informant) but there's so much I'd love to talk about, considering he last said he can "see the end" of his career coming. Here's another update.

Soderbergh recently talked with the Orlando Sentinel and spoke rather openly about what happened with Moneyball ("well, apparently I can't be trusted with a sports film") and moving on from that as well as his two potential projects coming up. Here's an excerpt from his comments on the Moneyball situation:

"There have been a couple of times in my career where I've been unceremoniously removed from projects. I don't waste a lot of energy on it. It doesn't get you anywhere. As soon as it became clear that there was no iteration of that movie that I was going to get to direct, I immediately started looking around for something else to do. I have a couple of other things in development that I had hoped to move up, but actor's schedules wouldn't allow it. But I have something I can get to after the first of the year, and I'm supposed to do my Liberace movie next summer. So my attitude when something like that happens is, 'What's next?' You can't dwell on it.

In regards to his other projects, Cleo the 3D rock opera about Cleopatra, and Liberace, his biopic about Liberace starring Michael Douglas, Soderbergh updated each of briefly. "I have a musical that I have set up. I'm running out of genres that I haven't tried," he said about Cleo. "But [it's] going to be a total party… I want to see the first person take a shot at doing a straight drama in 3D." That will be quite interesting to see. And on Liberace: "It's a great project all the way round and we're right in the middle of acquiring the money to make it… I'm confident we can get it together. We just may have to do it for a REAL price." Sounds good?
