Interview: Writer and Director of 9 - Animator Shane Acker

Hitting theaters this weekend (on 9-9-09) is a new animated movie titled 9, both written and directed by former Weta Digital animator Shane Acker. This was originally a short film in 2005 (watch it here) that went on to gain in Oscar nomination, and the attention of Tim Burton. From there, well, I think it's best to let Shane himself tell you the story. I had the honor of interviewing Mr. Acker recently and it turned out great. It's an understatement to call him inspiring, especially for animators, and in this we talk about what went into creating 9, how he learned from his mistakes, and his take on the world of animation. I always go into interviews prepared with questions that I hope will get good answers. This time that worked out perfectly, and my interview with Shane went incredibly well, which should have been more than enough to convince you to go see 9 in theaters (it looks amazing on the big screen). Great interview!
I was super excited to meet Shane Acker at ComicCon, so very cool! (Felt bad because I was then even more excited to meet Timur…had him sign a Daywatch dvd)

I'm confused…according to wikipedia, the movie is CG, but has a stop motion feel.

Great interview! Very interesting story with his creation process and learning experience.
I have watched the movie already and it was amazingly stunning in its visual! I am going to watch it again on Wednesday!! Yes, it has a stop motion feel since it is one of his influence, but still I felt it is a completely new kind of animation with his original characters and settings.

I just got back after watching the movie. Loved this short visual epic. Loved the story and the characters, only thing i felt short was the duration of the movie. It got over rather too quick, but then loved every bit of it.
