New Release Dates: Paranormal, Orson, Capitalism, The Road

A bunch of new release dates have been changed, set, or announced today. While all of the changes will be made to our Release Schedule, I wanted to point them out today, as there are a few films here that I know a lot of people are looking forward to seeing. First up, The Weinstein Company has set John Hillcoat's The Road for release on November 25th. Also opening on that same date is Richard Linklater's Me and Orson Welles, which premiered at TIFF last year and was just picked up by Freestyle Releasing. Michael Moore's new doc Capitalism: A Love Story also got pushed to October 2nd. More updates below.
One highly anticipated release is for the upcoming horror flick Paranormal Activity, which I just caught at Telluride (and it scared the living crap out of me). Paramount has set a limited opening for that film on September 25th which expansions depending on its success (so tell everyone to go see it if you want to see it). Wes Anderson's Fantastic Mr. Fox will hit limited theaters on November 13th before opening wide on November 25th in time for Thanksgiving. Jason Reitman's new film Up in the Air has currently been set for release on December 4th, but we've heard it may open very limited a bit earlier in late November.

I'm so glad THE ROAD has finally been set down for Thanksgiving weekend. It was set for last year, then moved, and finally it's been set next to NINJA ASSASSIN.
I really hate it when they move the films around. I don't disagree with THE ROAD being moved for late 2009 from the filled up slate of winter 2008, but it was disappointing to expect the film and then have to wait. Two films I'm deathly aggravated about are THE WOLF MAN and SHUTTER ISLAND.
The Wolf Man was set for April, pushed to August, then quickly moved to November, and now to February?? Same thing with Shutter Island. It was set to go November of last year, and they slated it for October. Fine, we'll have for another Scorsese epic, but now they're dumping it in the worst Box Office month in the year? Sure, THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST and THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS are two successful February releases, but that's a gamble. You don't put movies with such regard, such opportunity into the graveyard month of movie releases.
SHUTTER ISLAND should move back to Oct/Nov and THE WOLF MAN back to November. I rather see THE WOLF MAN over 2012, and then wait for Thanksgiving for THE ROAD and NINJA ASSASSIN.
Give us the good movies now, so we can pay attention to the rom coms and the stupid horrors already slated for February.

I think Weinstein is TRYING to fail. THE ROAD should have been released a year ago while the iron was hot, now it is lukewarm at best. Also they should have stuck to October. October and November this year are the busiest I can ever remember (cause of writers strike??? but besides the point). However, November is the more crowded month and THE ROAD NEEDS A PLATFORM RELEASE! Even though they are marketing it as an action, enough people know that it is not.
October has relatively less (espically with the removal of SHUTTER ISLAND) competition for the crowd this film is seeking. Also NOT ONE WIDE RELEASE drama opening over Thanksgiving has EVER been successful. The highest I can remember is the $13M made by ALEXANDER ($21M counting the extension). Worst idea.

i've been following "paranormal activity" for what seems like forever…….can't wait to see it. and of course "the road" can't come soon enough!!
