Anton Yelchin Joins the Cast of Jodie Foster's The Beaver
September 10, 2009

This past summer was a big one for Anton Yelchin. First he brought us a few laughs as Russian Star Fleet officer Pavel Chekov in Star Trek, and then joined the resistance as Kyle Reese in Terminator Salvation. Variety reports that he'll be joining the cast of the indie dark comedy The Beaver. You might remember this project when it was at the top of the 2008 Black List, but more recently its made swift moves in casting Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster (who will also be directing the Kyle Killen script). With Yelchin being thrown into the mix as Gibson and Foster's character's son, my level of intrigue for this project just keeps growing.
This is a script that at one time had Steve Carell attached, and then after he dropped, Jim Carrey was circling the project. Both of these options made sense to me. So when Mel Gibson came out of the blue with Jodie Foster in the same sentence, everything I expected from this project was thrown into a whirlwind. While I'm most certainly interested, I can't help but be nervous. It's been a long time since Mel Gibson had a lead role, let alone a comedic one, and while Jodie Foster certainly has some talent behind the camera, she's only directed one comedy (1995's Home for the Holidays). Nonetheless I'm anxious to see how this strange collection of talent comes together to bring The Beaver to the big screen. What's your take?

What's the movie about?

Luke,
The Beaver is about a man who deals with his depression by giving a Beaver hand puppet a personality of its own and insists on walking around his everyday life with the puppet, treating it like a living thing. It's a dark comedy.
Hope that's satisfactory for you!

smacks a bit of the puppet scene from "What About Bob?" …if done well, it could be a real rip….interested to see a trailer sometime soon…
