Interesting Concept Art Surfaces for Duncan Jones' Mute
September 15, 2009

Duncan Jones made one hell of a splash this summer with his indie sci-fi picture Moon. Now he's got us all wondering exactly what's coming next. Rumblings have come from Jones himself about several projects, but our friends at SlashFilm pointed us in the direction of some fresh new concept art that has shown up on the Liberty Films (Jones' production company) official website which highlights a project in development called Mute (we last talked about it here). The single piece of art paints the picture of a Blade Runner-esque future with the dark tones of a film noir. Upon closer inspection there are certainly some interesting details.

Under the concept art a caption can be found with a bit more detail about the project:
In Development. Writers: Duncan Jones (Moon) and Mike Johnson (Sherlock Holmes). Director: Duncan Jones. Producer: Stuart Fenegan. Project currently in preproduction and set to shoot in Berlin early 2010 with Studio Babelsburg.
SlashFilm notes (and corrects) the apparent typo in mentioning Studio Babelsberg as well as another intriguing observation. To the right of the female in this concept are there is a poster that has the word "Fremde" next to a dark silhouette. Their research indicated that the word means "foreign" and while this could be insignificant, they also speculate that this could reference some backdrop dealing with aliens a la District 9. Of course this is merely speculation. All we know is Mute is a thriller about a mute bartender looking for his abducted girlfriend in a future Berlin and the antagonists of this story are a comedy duo.
Fresh and surprisingly simple for a sci-fi picture, Moon is one of my favorite films of 2009 so far, and we'll be keeping our eyes on all projects from Duncan Jones. Is Duncan's latest looking good already?

The sign reads "Fremde Traume" or Foreign Dreams and it is very clearly a strip club.

wep's correct. The sign reads "Fremde Träume", which is german for 'foreign/strange dreams'. And yes it does look like that is the name of the strip club that can be made out.

Do Androids dream foreign/strange dreams? lol..
Looks like straight up syd mead! but then again, it would be great to see something of the blade runner ilk! I dont have anything against something referencing the look of something else as long as it can back it up with substance!! (Geez, look at 5th element, GREAT eye candy, story somewhat lacking..I love it thanks to Moebius' designs)
