Nicole Kidman to Star in Tomas Alfredson's The Danish Girl
September 16, 2009
by Brandon Lee Tenney
Last year, Tomas Alfredson directed, in my mind, one of the best films of the entire year: Let the Right One In. A haunting story exploring adolescence, alienation, and identity. Well, Alfredson's set to take man the helm again with another story exploring identity, though devoid of the supernatural. The Danish Girl is an adaptation of David Ebershoff's book, the account of Einar Wegener/Lili Elbe, who in 1931 was the first to receive a sex change operation, going from man to woman. Nicole Kidman has signed on to portray Wegener/Elbe, while Charlize Theron, who had been attached to play Wegener's wife, has dropped out.
It's more than obvious that Alfredson has the directorial chops to handle was is sure to be an emotional hail storm. His deft portrayal of an outcast and inner struggle in Let the Right One In should prove to carry over nicely into this film. But it's not Alfredson that concerns me - it's Kidman. She's a bit cold, and maybe a bit too distant for such a role that will require us, the audience, to follow her internal struggle, to sympathize with her issues of self. Though, my concern may prove unwarranted, because even with my reservations, I still like Kidman. And I'm always willing to give her the benefit of the doubt. Or am I just raving mad?

I think she's too feminine to play a chick who used to be a dude. Too small of a frame, too delicate.

Isn't she in retirement or something. She should stay there.

Agree with #2. Unless they use some serious makeup on her (think Charlize Theron in Monster - but much uglier), this just doesn't sound right.

yeah, isn't Kidman on retirement mode right now? don't get me wrong, I like Nicole K and I personally think she'd be able to pull it off…but is she "serious" about going back into acting? - that's the question.

Nicole is the most intriguing actress in the world right now, she's either absolutely Phenomenal: To Die For, The Others, The Hours, Dogville, Birth or purely FAKE: Cold Mountain ( she should have gotten a Razzie for that one ), The Interpretor, Australia.
I sooo want her to be good in this one as it's surely gonna be another Oscar nomination, she simply needs to give the charecter a more in-depth approach and understanding like she did with VIrginia Wolf.

Totally agree with Cmurder's comment in #2 above.
Kidman is a talented actress. But even so, it's just too much a visual stretch to ever believe science could cram a male body into her frame.
I wish somebody could find this lady a decent enough role to put her career back on track.
