Zach Galifianakis Joins the Cast of It's Kind of a Funny Story
September 16, 2009
by Ethan Anderton
Zach Galifianakis exploded onto the screen this year in The Hangover. But the bearded comedian has been inspiring laughter for a long time, garnering quite a following while touring with Patton Oswalt, Brian Posehn and Maria Bamford as part of The Comedians of Comedy. I've been following him for years, waiting for his career to take off. Now he's one of the most in-demand comedy actors working today, and he just added another project to his roster. THR reports Galifianakis has joined the cast of It's Kind of a Funny Story, a coming-of-age comedy from the writers/directors of Half-Nelson - Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden.
It's Kind of a Funny Story, which also stars Emma Roberts, is based on the Ned Vizzini young-adult novel which tells the story of a teenage boy who, after a bout of depression, is sent to a mental institution, where he ends up in the adult ward and meets a number of offbeat patients as well as a teenage girl. Galifianakis would play one of the major adult roles in the institution while Roberts will play the teenage love interest.
While Galifianakis has plenty of other comedy roles coming up (Due Date with Robert Downey, Jr. as well as a small role in Dinner for Schmucks and the promise of a Hangover sequel to shoot next year) Funny Story will allow him to stretch his dramatic chops (which you might have already seen a hint of in the quirky indie Visioneers, available on Netflix Instant Viewing). He can next be seen this October in the comedy Youth in Revolt, but I recommend checking him out in KanYe West's music video "Can't Tell Me Nothin'." I'm excited for anything with Galifianakis and look forward to this and all of his upcoming projects. How about you?

glad to see him getting the limelight- a rare comic genius that translates (pretty) well to screen. this sounds right up his alley.
oh, and don't forget, he's also a pretty major part of the new hbo show Bored to Death, the jason schwartzman vehicle. looks fantabulous.

If they ever make a movie based on the life of Fritz Springmeier, Galifianakis is the guy to play him. Or maybe Will Ferrel? If you don't know who Fritz Springmeier is, he wrote "The Illuminati Formula Used to Create an Undetectable Total Mind Control Slave", a very scary book. You can read it for free on various web sites.
