Paul Dano Joins Cameron Diaz & Tom Cruise's Wichita Project
September 25, 2009
by Alex Billington
Although this is project already shooting (see photos here), casting announcements are still hitting. Variety has announced that Paul Dano has joined the cast of Wichita, an action comedy that stars Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz. The story centers on a federal agent, portrayed by Cruise, who finds himself teamed with a wholesome and upbeat Midwestern woman, played by Diaz. Dano will play a charming but mysterious scientist whose invention is at the center of Cruise and Diaz's chase. Fox has apparently given this a huge budget, with plane crashes and epic action set pieces, which is exciting, but who knows if it'll deliver.
Wichita, which will have a new title by the time it's released sometime next year, is being directed by James Mangold (Girl Interrupted, Kate & Leopold, Identity, Walk the Line, 3:10 to Yuma) and also stars Maggie Grace and Marc Blucas. The screenplay was written by Dana Fox (Couples Retreat), Scott Frank (Minority Report, Marley & Me), Laeta Kalogridis (Shutter Island), and Mangold. Dano is (still) an up-and-coming 25-year-old actor who has appeared in Little Miss Sunshine, There Will Be Blood, and Taking Woodstock. I'm glad to see him join this, but I'm still a bit cautious, considering it's Fox. Maybe we'll see a teaser soon?
