Leonardo DiCaprio Heading Into The Deep Blue Goodbye

After exiting News Corp this past summer, Variety says Hollywood powerhouse Peter Chernin is coming back to 20th Century Fox, or at least his new production company is joining several projects already in development. The most high profile of these projects is The Deep Blue Goodbye, an adaptation of the first book in John D. MacDonald's mystery series first published in 1964. Leonardo DiCaprio is attached to star and his company Appian Way will produce with Chernin's new company. Though we've seen plenty of mysteries told on screen, there's something about the character Travis McGee that makes this intriguing.
McGee is "a self-described beach bum who won his houseboat in a card game. He's also a knight errant who's wary of credit cards, retirement benefits, political parties, mortgages, and television. He only works when his cash runs out and his rule is simple: he'll help you find whatever was taken from you, as long as he can keep half." McGee doesn't even declare himself a detective, but rather a "salvage expert." This sounds like it could be a very interesting role for DiCaprio, who never ceases to impress me. I'm still baffled by the Academy's penchant for ignoring him when it comes to the Oscars. Maybe this role will change their minds?

i like the concept but (since i haven't read the book) i'm not sure how this will be a mystery. i'm looking forward to a trailer.

Someone once told me about a comic book character who would help you and then collect 10% of your earnings, whether you make $25,000 a year or $25 million. Sounds very similar to this.
Anyway, haven't researched the story yet, but this article is a little light on plot.

I'm not baffled about DiCaprio never winning. It's one out of the very few things the Academy does right. He's the most overrated actor. He overacts everything he does. It's annoying to watch.

You obviously know very little about acting. Leo constantly challenges himself with every role he takes and has never really turned in a bad performance. Besides, he never overacts, he acts his character out perfectly.
